By the grace of Hashem*,

27 Sivan* 5717,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of Thursday of Parshas* Shelach*. In the meantime, you have surely received mine, which responded to your previous correspondence.

The content of your letter, filled with bitterness and discouragement, is not in accordance with the path traced by the Baal Shem Tov*, his disciples and the disciples of his disciples, the luminaries of Chassidus*, who systematically emphasized the divine injunction: "Serve Hashem* with joy." Now, I have already written to several Chassidim* and also, it seems to me, to you yourself, to underscore that this is a halachah* and not merely a Chassidic* practice. It is a fundamental and essential ruling, by no means secondary.

This halachah* is decided by the Rambam*, at the end of the laws of Lulav*. He states: "This is an important form of the service of Hashem*." And in his laws of character traits, at the end of chapter 3, he adds: "This is how one serves Hashem* at all times, as it is said: 'In all your ways, know Him.'" His words are reproduced by the Tur* Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 231.

Even if, upon reflecting on your own situation, you do not understand the justification for this joy, it has already been explained in the holy Tanya* that the body and what concerns it do not disturb the joy of the soul and what causes it. You will consult this text.

May Hashem* grant that you announce good news to me by return mail. You will tell me that you are intensifying your study of the Torah*, in its dimension that is called the "Tree of Life" (note: referring to Chassidus*, the inner dimension of Torah*), that life and joy are drawing closer and even uniting.

ולתוכן מכתבו המלא נמיכת רוח ונפילת רוח וכו' לא זוהי הדרך שהתווה הבעש"ט תלמידיו ותלמידי תלמידיו מאורי החסידות, אשר הדגיש פעם אחר פעם ציווי השי"ת עבדו את ה' בשמחה וכבר כתבתי לכו"כ מאנ"ש וכמדומה גם לכת"ר אשר באמת פסק הלכה היא ולא רק מדת חסידות, ופס"ד יסודי ועיקרי ולא פס"ד פרטי והוא פס"ד הרמב"ם סוף הלכות לולב, עיי"ש בלשונו עבודה גדולה היא, ובצירוף פס"ד בהלכות דיעות סוף פרק ג', נמצא כו' עובד את ה' תמיד וכו' בכל דרכיך דעהו, הועתק גם בטור שו"ע או"ח סי' רל"א. ואף אם בהתבוננותו במצב עצמו יתמה לשמחה מה זו עושה, כבר מלתו אמורה בספר תניא קדישא בענין שמחת הנפש וסיבותי' ואיך שאין הגוף ועניניו מבלבלים בזה, יעו"ש.

ויהי רצון שיבשר בחוזר בהאמור וכן אשר מוסיף בלימודיו בחלק התורה הנקראת אילנא דחיי, ואשר החיים והשמחה מתקשרים עד שמתאחדים זע"ז.
