Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5555 — Prayer

Volume 15 · Letter 231

By the grace of Hashem*,

28 Sivan* 5717,

Brooklyn,

To Mr. Shlomo (note: Mr. Sh. Sasson of Montevideo),

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 18/6 and I am surprised that you do not specify what your activity is in Montevideo and what time you set aside for the study of our Torah*, the Torah of life, which is our life and the length of our days, the channel and the vessel for receiving the blessings of Hashem*, Who gives the Torah*, in all of a person's needs, material and spiritual. No doubt you will specify all this to me at the next opportunity.

You ask me for what reason it is not good to call the community of Montevideo "Shuva Yisrael*" (note: see, on this subject, letters nos. 5154 and 5346). The reason is as follows. There is no element, no group in the world that does not have defects and deficiencies. Indeed, only the Holy One, blessed be He, is perfect and, in the expression of the Zohar*, He is "the Perfection of all things."

Since everything is tainted by deficiency, one can envisage — and concrete experience proves this to be the case — that certain people refuse to draw near, precisely because of that deficiency, even if, in all other respects, everything suits them. Consequently, when one establishes a new association in a new place, it is important that the greatest number of Jews become its members. To this end, it is good to give this association a new name and not an old name already borne by another group, even if it is Shuva Yisrael*, which refers to Torah* and mitzvos*. In this way, those who are critical of Shuva Yisrael*, whether justly or not, will not be prevented from joining this new structure. Of course, everything would be different if it were a branch or a local chapter. Then, it is clear that one would need to choose the name of the central organization. This is not the case for a new group.

You surely know of the practice of reading Tehillim* each day after the morning prayer, according to their monthly division. Likewise, each weekday before the morning prayer, it is good to give a few coins to tzedakah*, without making a vow.

With my blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,
