Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5557 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 15 · Letter 233

By the grace of Hashem*,

28 Sivan* 5717,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 21 Sivan*, in which you speak of your state of health and describe your pains. On several occasions, you have recovered, and then suffered a relapse.

It would be good for you to seek a specialist physician in this field, and you will follow his prescriptions. The Torah* has authorized the physician to heal, but it is obvious that if he sometimes expresses the opposite of a blessing, he thereby becomes one of the causes of deterioration of the health of the soul and consequently of the body. Indeed, the verse, alluding to every Jew, states: "I will bless those who bless you."

This attitude must be even more clearly excluded because, as you write, you bear a sacred mission, that of a sofer* (scribe). And you know that the writings of the Arizal* condemn anger in terrifying terms, affirming that one who loses his temper changes his soul. And there is no need to elaborate, so self-evident is this, as it is said: "As the face reflects in water, so the heart of man reflects in that of his fellow." Consequently, when one knows how to control oneself, when one speaks only blessings and good words, one also transforms the heart of one's wife. Then peace and joy reign in the home.

You will study, with the appropriate depth, Igeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, chapter 25. This text precisely comments on the statement of our Sages that "one who becomes angry is considered as if he worshiped idols."

It would be good to have your tefillin* checked, in particular those of the head. And each day, after the morning prayer, you will read Tehillim* according to their monthly division, without making a vow.

With my blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,
