Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5558 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 15 · Letter 234
By the grace of Hashem*,
28 Sivan* 5717,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I respond to your letter of 24 Sivan*, in which you pose the following questions, for which you have still not obtained answers:
A) You sometimes feel the desire to study, while at other times the reverse is true, in which case you devote yourself to other activities. How can one achieve a permanent ardor?
A good solution is the following. Habit is a second nature, and the elevation of a person proceeds in stages and not in a leap from one extreme to the other. Such elevation is achieved precisely at the cost of effort, for "one who tells you he did not make effort yet succeeded — do not believe him." The reflection that enables one to escape the advances of the evil inclination* is perfectly explained in the Tanya*, as its index indicates.
B) How can one memorize new ideas of Torah*?
In general, people are not identical in this regard. Everything depends on aptitudes and sensibilities. Our Sages observe that "they have different temperaments" and "different faces." On this subject, you will consult, in general terms, the Laws of Torah Study of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 2, which specifies how even one who is forgetful by nature can acquire more and more knowledge.
C) How does one define the fervor of prayer?
In general terms, it is said: "Know before Whom you stand," which implies three forms of reflection: Who is standing? Before Whom does he stand? How do the one and the Other enter into relation through prayer? More specifically, certain ideas are linked to specific passages of the prayer, in accordance with the content of these ideas and the meaning of the words.
D) What is the book of Ethics that enables one to reach the level that should be that of every Jew?
A book alone does not suffice to attain a level. One must, in addition, introduce one's own effort. It is in this way that the study of the book is fruitful and exercises its effect. You will therefore establish a regular study of the Tanya* and, more generally, of Chassidic* discourses. If you learn them with the necessary depth and concentration, your eyes will be illuminated.
More generally, stop asking questions! Study with ardor and constancy. Thus will be fulfilled for you the promise of our Sages: "If you make efforts, they will be crowned with success."
You surely maintain the practice of reading Tehillim* according to their monthly division. In any case, you will adopt it henceforth.
With my blessing,
On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita*,
the secretary,
