To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I am replying to your letter of the sixth day of Tammuz*, which I received on the luminous day of 12 Tammuz* — the day of the liberation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. Indeed, he was imprisoned for having given of himself entirely for Torah* and mitzvos*. In fact, he stood against a powerful regime, and great miracles were observed. The angel of evil himself was compelled to answer "Amen." What occurred at that time is known, even if, for various reasons, all the details have not yet been published, as was mentioned during the Chassidic* farbrengen*.

In the world, nothing is useless, and the fact that these details have reached us teaches the following lesson for our service of Hashem. One must not be at all affected by one's surroundings and the opposition they display, even if one concedes that this opposition is not merely apparent. One must follow the royal path — the way of the King of the world. Not only does one thereby fulfill the injunctions of the Creator, but moreover, ultimately, one sees success despite this opposition. In the majority of cases, one perceives unambiguously that the opposition does not truly exist but is merely an appearance.

I had the pleasure of seeing your father, the eminent Rav Shlita*, at the Chassidic* farbrengen* of the Festival of Liberation. May Hashem grant that this liberation also manifest itself in what concerns him and the entire family — in all that obstructs the study of Torah*, with peace of mind and breadth, and the practice of mitzvos* with joy and enthusiasm.

You make reference to the travel of ships during Shabbos* (note: see also letters no. 5534 and 5569). It would be good for you to ask my close relative, the Chassid*, Rav A. Z. Slonim, to show you the copy of my letter (note: letter no. 5534), which is in his possession. It describes the operation of ships nowadays. You will deduce from it how terrifying this problem is, how intense the darkness of exile is. Indeed, this is a clear-cut prohibition, without the slightest doubt on the matter. Yet people act as if they did not know. It is self-evident.

As I wrote to someone, never before have so many of those who fear the word of Hashem stumbled over a single mitzvah* that is, by itself, considered equivalent to all the mitzvos* — doing so publicly and precisely in the name of all the people of Israel. Moreover, all of this is made to appear as love of the Holy Land. It is difficult to say more, so painful and even terrifying is this.

With my blessing to give good news of everything you mention in your letter — which, of course, also includes yourself — and with my blessing on the occasion of the Festival of Liberation,

במענה על מכתבו מששי בתמוז שנתקבל ביום הבהיר יום י"ב תמוז יום הגאולה של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע ממאסרו על מס"נ לתורה ומצותי' שאכן התקומם נגד ממלכה אדירה ואיך שראו נסים גלוים שגם מלאך רע יענה אמן וכידוע פרשת הדברים אף שמכמה סיבות אין מפרסמים עדיין כל הפרטים בזה, וכמדובר בהתועדות. כיון שאין דבר בעולם לבטלה, בזה שהגיעו אלינו הידיעות ע"ד הנ"ל, הנה זהו הוראה גם בעבודה שאין להתרשם כלל מהסביבה והתנגדותה (אפילו את"ל שאינה רק מדומה), וללכת בדרך המלך מלכו של עולם, ולא זו בלבד שמקיימים באופן כזה ציוויו של הבורא אלא שעוד זאת סו"ס רואים גם הצלחה למרות התנגדות וברובא דרובא רואים בעליל שאינה במציאות כ"א מדומה.

נעם לי לראות את כבוד אביו הרה"ג וכו' שליט"א בהתועדות דחג הגאולה ויהי רצון שגם בענינו ובעניני כל המשפחה תראה הגאולה מכל דברים המבלבלים ללימוד התורה מנוחת הנפש ובהרחבה לקיום מצותיו בשמחה ובטוב לבב...

במ"ש אודות נסיעת האניות בשבת, כדאי שיבקש את ש"ב הרה"ח וכו' רע"ז סלונים שי' להראותו הנמצא אצלו העתק מכתבי בתיאור הפלגת אניות בימינו אלה, שמשם יווכח גודל ההבהלה שבדבר וחשך הגלות שלמרות שאיסור ברור הוא ואין כל מקום לספק מעלימים עין וכו' וד"ל, וכמו שכתבתי לאחד שמעולם לא היתה כזאת אשר חרדים לדבר ה' יכשלו בסיטוניות במצוה ששקולה כנגד כל המצות ודוקא בפרהסיא ודוקא בשם כלל ישראל ולא עוד אלא שמלבישים זה בלבוש דחבת הארץ וכו' וכו' וקשה להאריך בדבר המכאיב עד כדי הבהלה.

בברכה לבשו"ט אודות כל הענינים שמזכיר במכתבו ומובן שגם הוא בכלל ובברכת חג הגאולה.
