Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received the catalog of Hebrew manuscripts (note: contained in the two volumes Ginzei Mishnah and Ginzei Talmud), which are the microfilms of those found in Russia. I thank you for thinking to send them to me. I hope you will also send me the second part when it is ready. I thank you in advance. I glanced through this catalog rapidly and offer, regarding it, a few notes that will surely be of interest to you:

A) Manuscript no. 38: You no doubt know that there are several textual variants in Tractate Yoma* 69b. Perhaps this is why you selected this passage.

B) Manuscript no. 95, commentary on the kings: You say that it is a Midrash* on the names of the kings of Israel. If this is indeed the case, it is particularly rare. Conversely, it is known that there exists a commentary on the kings in the Kabbalah*, dealing with the names of the kings of Edom, at the end of Parshas Vayishlach* and in the corresponding passage of Divrei HaYamim*.

C) Manuscript no. 98, the book of astrology by Rabbi Chaim Vital*: It seems to me that it has been printed in the Holy Land and that it is in our library, although I do not have it at hand at the present time. You note that there is a foreword to this book called "Introduction into the Gates." You surely know that there exists an entire book by Rabbi Chaim Vital* bearing this name. It is therefore difficult to suppose that he gave the same name to the foreword of another book. Perhaps Rabbi Chaim Vital* is therefore not the author of this foreword.

הנני בזה לאשר קבלת הקטלוג של כתבי יד עבריים שהובאו במיקרופילם מהנמצאים ברוסי', ות"ח על שימת לבבו לשלחו לי. תקותי שישלח לי גם את החלק השני כשיהי' מוכן בידו ותודה מראש.

בעברי בחפזי בקטלוג מצאתי אי-איזה ענינים להעיר בהם אשר בטח יענינו את כ':

א) כת"י מ' 38. בטח ידוע לו כי ביומא סט, ב יש כו"כ חילוקי גרסאות. ואולי משום כך תפס כ' בפרגמנט זה.

ב) כת"י מ' 95, דרוש המלכים, וכותב שזהו מדרש על שמות מלכי ישראל. אם כן הוא, הרי זה ענין נדיר ביותר. לאידך גיסא, ידוע דרוש המלכים בקבלה - והוא על שמות מלכי אדום (סוף פ' וישלח, ובמקום המקביל בדבה"י).

ג) כת"י מ' 98, ספר התכונה להרח"ו. כמדומני שנדפס באה"ק ת"ו, ומדומה לי ג"כ שנמצא בהספרי' אצלנו, אף שאינו נמצא עתה תחת ידי. ולהערתו שיש מבוא לספר בשם "מבוא שערים", בטח ידוע לו שיש ספר שלם בשם זה להרח"ו. ולכן רחוק לומר שיקרא הרח"ו גם הקדמה לספר אחר שלו בשם "מבוא שערים". ואולי אינה להרח"ו.
