may Hashem grant you long life,

Blessings and greetings,

I received with pleasure your letter of Friday, the eve of Shabbos* Parshas Balak*, 6 Tammuz*. In the meantime, you have surely received, through my secretariat, a copy of my letter on the necessity of broadening activities. I hope you are working in this direction whenever possible, especially since the Festival of Liberation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, has taken place in the meantime — he who made such efforts to organize Chabad* women and girls, to develop their activities.

Granted, the period of the Three Weeks* (note: from 17 Tammuz to 9 Av, commemorating the destruction of the Temple) is not a joyous one, since it commemorates destruction and devastation. Yet it is not a time of sadness (note: see also letters no. 5626 and 5629) and discouragement either — quite the contrary. Indeed, only the lower Temple, made of wood and stone, was destroyed — but not the spiritual and inner Temple. And commenting on the verse, "I shall dwell among them," our Sages* specify: "Within each one."

The Three Weeks* therefore remind us that every Jewish man and every Jewish woman must build for Him a dwelling place here below, by observing the Torah* and mitzvos* in daily life, as it is stated: "They shall make Me a Sanctuary and I shall dwell among them" — in the most literal sense. These enable us to hasten the complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach*, by spreading the wellsprings (note: of Chassidus*) outward, including among those who are still on the outside. In these days especially, after the terrible destruction and devastation to which we witnessed with our own eyes (note: during the Second World War), each one of us bears an immense responsibility. Divine Providence saved us, made us survivors, "in order to sustain a great people."

Now, "HaKadosh Baruch Hu* does not deal treacherously with His creatures." In entrusting each man and each woman with this broad and magnified responsibility, He also grants everyone the strength, the means, and the capacity to fulfill this mission. May Hashem grant that very soon, these days be transformed into joy and gladness.

בנועם קבלתי מכתבן מיום ו' עש"ק פ' בלק, ו' תמוז, ובטח בינתים קבלו העתק המכתב ע"י המזכירות ע"ד הצורך להגדיל העבודה, ותקותי שעושות בכיוון זה בכל האפשריות, ובפרט שהי' בינתים יום הגאולה של נשיאנו כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר אשר כל כך השתדל באירגון נשי ובנות חב"ד והתפתחותן ועבודתם.

ואף על פי שלכאורה הזמן דבין המצרים הוא עת של אי-שמחה כיון שמזכירים ע"ד החורבן וההירוס, אבל פשיטא שגם זמן זה אינו ענין לעצבות ונמיכת רוח, אלא אדרבה, שהרי מה שנחרב הוא בית המקדש התחתון הבנוי מעצים ומאבנים ולא ביהמ"ק הרוחני והפנימי, וידוע מאמר רז"ל על הפ' ושכנתי בתוכם, בתוך כל או"א מהם. וענין דבין המצרים הוא להזכיר ולעורר אשר החובה על כל אחד ואחת מבני ישראל הוא לעשות לו דירה בתחתונים על ידי שמירת התורה ומצותי' בחיי היום-יום לקיים מש"כ ועשו לי מקדש ושכנתי בתוכם ממש, ולהחיש הגאולה השלימה על ידי משיח צדקנו בהפצת המעיינות אפילו בין אלו שעדין חוצה. וגדולה האחריות על כל אחד ואחת מאתנו בימינו אלה בפרט, אחר החורבן וההרס הנורא שראינו במו עינינו, ואותנו הצילה ההשגחה הפרטית והשאירה אותנו לפליטה כדי להחיות עם רב. וכיון שאין הקב"ה בא בטרוניא עם בריותיו, הרי ברור שיחד עם האחריות הגדולה כפולה ומכופלת המוטלת על כל אחד ואחת ניתנו גם הכחות והיכולת והאפשריות למלא כל אחד תפקידו.

ויהי רצון אשר בקרוב ממש ימים אלו יהפכו לששון ולשמחה.
