Greetings and blessings,

Through the intermediary of the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs — Rav Reuven Tzvi Yehudah Feigelstock — I have learned of your state of mind. You say that it is difficult for you to accept consolation (note: following the passing of his son).

According to faith, and even according to reason, it is evident that a soul is eternal. This is particularly the case for a Jewish soul, which is a veritable part of the Divine. It follows that this soul always aspires to elevation. When it resides within a physical body here below, it achieves this elevation through the practice of Torah* and mitzvos*. This is not so when it departs from this body.

It then falls upon those who desire its well-being to seek its merit by intensifying their own practice of Torah* and mitzvos*, for the benefit of this soul. In order for Torah* study and the practice of mitzvos* to be positive, one must be joyous and enthusiastic — for one has the happiness of fulfilling the Will of the Giver of the Torah*, of securing the elevation of this soul. If one is sad, or even merely bitter, one acts contrary to what is required. Then the quality of study and practice is compromised. Consequently, the elevation of the soul (note: of the deceased son) is likewise compromised.

In this case, it is an only son. You must therefore do everything in your power to achieve this elevation. To that end, you shall strengthen your faith — that the soul is unchanging and eternal. For you can accomplish great things to bring about this elevation. One must therefore be joyous at having such an opportunity. Conversely, sadness, Heaven forbid, and even bitterness in this matter, demonstrate a weakness of faith in the permanence of the soul.

May Hashem strengthen your heart and your mind to perceive things as they truly are, and to serve Hashem with joy and enthusiasm. You and your wife shall educate your daughter — to whom Hashem shall grant long life — toward Torah*, the marriage canopy, and good deeds, in good health.

It would be good to pay someone to recite Kaddish* for your son. You, however, should not recite it yourself. Each weekday, you shall set aside a few coins for tzedakah* for the elevation of his soul. Likewise, you shall have the mezuzos* of your apartment checked, for it appears that some of them may not be in proper order.

With blessing to convey good news of all this,
