Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to the question you pose in your letter:
A) Should you continue the study of Tanya*?
I am surprised by such a question and by the doubt you entertain in this matter, Heaven forbid. It is perfectly clear that the study of the inner dimension of Torah* is an absolute necessity, and in our era this has been revealed through Chassidus*. Consult the explanation of our master Rabbi Chaim Vital* in his introduction to the Sha'ar HaHakdamos*, and what he quotes from the holy Zohar* on this subject, in fearsome words. See also the Kuntres Eitz Chaim* of the Rebbe Rashab* — father of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us — which deals at length with this subject.
And even for those who are students of the disciples of the Gaon of Vilna* (note: see letter no. 4601), here is what the Gaon himself says on this subject, as quoted in the Even Shlomo*, chapter 8: "One who has not grasped the esoteric meaning cannot fully possess the plain meaning. One who could have understood the secrets of the Torah* but made no effort to do so will receive a severe punishment, Heaven forbid. Those who seek the allusive and inner meaning cannot become victims of the evil inclination."
B) One of the best means of avoiding thoughts that disturb during prayer is to reduce idle speech during the course of the day. In general, such speech is the source of vain thoughts. Furthermore, one should study and pray from a Siddur* and from a book. Prayer and study should be pure, which means that one should observe Tevilas Ezra* (note: immersion after marital relations or, more broadly, each day). On weekdays, one should give tzedakah* before the morning prayer. And above all, as the Mishnah* states, one should first accept upon oneself the yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven, then the yoke of Torah* and mitzvos*. You should influence your friends in this direction as well, and the merit of the community will assist you in achieving success in this matter.
With blessing,
For the Rebbe shlita*,
the secretary,
