To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yehoshua (note: Rav Y. Levy, see letter no. 5561),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter, in which you pose the following question: your apartment is cramped. Is it advisable to rent a new house, even if this will have the effect of putting you into debt?
Our Sages state that a beautiful home gives a person breadth of mind, and it is said: "If you have acquired wisdom, what do you lack?" It is therefore advisable for you to move into a new, larger house — with, of course, the agreement of your wife, the mistress of the household. With this breadth of mind, you will redouble your ardor in your fundamental work for family purity in the Holy Land and, more broadly, for all that pertains to Torah* and mitzvos*. And you know the explanation given by the holy Tikkunei Zohar*, in Tikkun* 6, on the statement of our Sages that "a beautiful home gives a person breadth of mind."
With blessing to convey good news of all this,
You make reference to the Tefillin* of Rabbeinu Tam* (note: regarding how they should be written). I have received no instruction on this matter. It must therefore be verified with the scribes among the Chassidim* of the Holy Land.

במענה על מכתבו בשאלתו, כיון שדרים בצפיפות, האם כדאי לשכור דירה חדשה אשר עי"ז יכנסו לחובות.
והנה כיון שאמרו חז"ל אשר דירה נאה מרחבת דעתו של אדם, ודעה קנית מה חסרת, נכון הדבר שיעתיקו לדירה חדשה יותר מרווחת כמובן באם זוגתו תחי' עק"ב מסכמת בזה, ומתוך הרחבת הדעת יוסיף אומץ בעבודתו הכי נעלית בעניני טהרת המשפחה באה"ק ת"ו ובכלל בעניני תומ"צ, וכידוע פירוש ת"ז ת"ו הק' בעניני מרז"ל האמור דירה נאה וכו' מרחיבין דעתו של אדם.
