Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 16 Menachem Av, in which you note that I did not mention the letter of recommendation in my previous correspondence. This matter was already discussed during your visit here. In my letter, I recalled the custom of the Rebbe's household (note: the custom of not issuing letters of recommendation), and you know the instruction of our Sages regarding the necessity of maintaining the custom of one's forebears. In general, there is no need, in such a case, to emphasize how important this is in the eyes of those who fear the word of Hashem and His Torah*. It is said of every Jew: "I sleep in exile, but my heart is awake for the Holy One, blessed be He, His Torah* and His mitzvos*." And: "All Your people are righteous."

May Hashem bless you, as well as all those who assist you in your endeavor, whose value is of the highest order. In good health, you will redouble your ardor in this matter, all the more so since we find ourselves in the days of which it is said: "Whoever adds receives increase" (note: from the 15th of Av onward, whoever intensifies Torah study receives increased vitality). You shall therefore know success in this domain and also in all that concerns you personally. May Hashem grant that each person communicate to the other only goodness, and "there is no good other than Torah*" and mitzvos*, which are "good for Heaven and good for the creatures," according to the well-known explanation of our Sages.

במענה על מכתבו מט"ז מנ"א, בהערת כת"ר שלא הזכרתי במכתבי הקודם אודות מכתב המלצה.

הרי נדבר כבר עד"ז בביקורו של כת"ר שי' כאן, ואמרתי אשר אין זה בנוהג בית הרב, וכבר ידועה הוראת רז"ל הזהרו במנהג אבותיכם. ובנדון האמור, בכלל אין צורך בכגון דא לפרסום גודל הענין בעיני כל החרדים לדבר ה' ולתורתו. והרי כל אחד מישראל עליו נאמר אני ישנה בגלותא ולבי ער להקב"ה לתורתו ולמצותיו. ועמך כולם צדיקים.

ויברך השי"ת את כת"ר, וכל העוזרים לו במפעלו הכי נעלה, אשר מתוך בריאות הנכונה יוסיף חיילים בעבודתו זו, ובפרט שנמצאים אנו בימים אשר עליהם נאמר כל המוסיף מוסיפין לו, ההצלחה בהענין עצמו, נוסף על ההצלחה בהענינים הפרטים.

ויהי רצון שיתבשרו כאו"א אך טוב, ואין טוב אלא תורה ומצות, טוב לשמים וטוב לבריות, וכמרז"ל הידוע.
