Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 19 Menachem Av, briefly describing what you will be doing during the summer. I thank you especially for the good news of the progress of the students regarding their obedience, as well as that of the teachers. Both are necessary, and that of the teachers is undoubtedly more necessary than that of the students. This is self-evident. It follows that there is no reason to be distressed by the fact that it was necessary to dismiss a teacher. Indeed, the communal interest takes precedence over the individual interest.

I read with satisfaction that there is progress in the domain of metzitzah* (note: the oral suction following circumcision, which had been banned by the Rabbis, see letter no. 5410). May Hashem grant that you achieve success in this matter as quickly as possible. If necessary, one may add regarding the glass tube (note: used to perform the metzitzah after circumcision) to which you refer, that according to certain opinions, cotton may be placed inside the tube, so that the suction is performed through this cotton, which has a sterilizing effect by blocking bacteria that pass through it. More precisely, I mean that one may place inside the tube a quantity of sterilized cotton that does not impede the suction and creates a junction between the mouth of the one performing it and the blood drawn into the tube.

On this subject, regarding a woman, the custom is to write "in all her limbs" (note: when requesting a blessing of good health for her). There is a discussion on this matter in Tractate Bechoros* 45a, even though some attempt, with great difficulty, to justify the formulation that speaks of two hundred and forty-eight limbs (note: only a man has 248 limbs; the number of a woman's limbs is debated among our Sages).

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מי"ט מנ"א, ר"פ מהסידור בימי הקיץ. ות"ח ובעיקר על הבשו"ט אשר ניכרת הטבה במשמעת התלמידים וכן במשמעת המורים, כי שניהם מוכרחות, ואפשר שמשמעת המורים מוכרחת עוד יותר ממשמעת התלמידים, וק"ל. ומזה מובן שאין להתרשם ממה שהוכרחו לפטר אחד המורים, כיון שתועלת הרבים דוחה תועלת היחיד.

נעם לי לקרות שמתקדם ענין המציצה. ויהי רצון שיצליחו בזה בהקדם הכי אפשרי. ובאם יהי' הכרח בזה - יש להוסיף בהנוגע לשפופרת זכוכית שכותב אודותה, אשר ישנם כאלו המשימים מוך בהשפופרת ומוצצים דרך המוך, וטעם שימת המוך אשר עושה פעולה סטערליזאציע ומעכב הבאקטעריעס העוברים דרכו. ליתר ביאור - כוונתי, שכשמשימים בהשפופרת איזה כמות מוך באופן שלא יפריע לכח המציצה הבל הפה של המוצץ וכן הדם הנמצץ יעבור דרך המוך שהוא סטערעליזירט...
