Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you tell me that you find yourself at a crossroads. You cannot decide whether you should continue your studies at the yeshivah* and subsequently have a life of financial constraint, or else... You ask me what I think.

It is perfectly clear that you must continue your studies at the yeshivah*. It seems self-evident to you that this will result in imposing a life of constraint upon you. Yet even if it were obvious that you could not aspire to a good salary, anyone endowed with discernment understands that the happiness of life is not linked to a high salary, but rather to health and moral satisfaction. Many are those who earn high salaries and would be happy to exchange them for a little moral satisfaction, a little substance in the emptiness of their existence. One can verify this concretely. Moreover, one of the fundamental principles of our faith states that the One Who gives the Torah* and commands the mitzvos* is the Creator of the world, Who directs it in a concrete manner even at the present hour, Who provides sustenance for each person. You understand well what follows from all of this.

May Hashem grant that you resist the advances of the evil inclination, that you advance firmly on this path — that of the King of the world — and that you study with vigor and ardor the revealed part of the Torah* and Chassidus*.

במענה על מכתבו בו כותב שעומד על הפרק ואינו יכול להחליט אם להמשיך בישיבה ולחיות חיי דוחק או וכו' ושואל עצתי בזה.

והנה פשוט הוא שצריך הוא להמשיך לימודו בישיבה, ומה שכבר החליט שפירוש הענין - חיי דוחק, אפילו את"ל שלא ישתכר משכורת גדולה וכיו"ב, פשוט בעיני כל בר שכל, שהאושר בחיים אינו תלוי במשכורת גדולה, אלא בבריאות סיפוק נפשי וכו' ורבו במאד בעלי המשכורת גדולה שבשמחה היו מחליפים אותה בקצת סיפוק נפשי יותר ובקצת תוכן יותר בחייהם הריקים, וכנראה במוחש, וביחוד אשר מעיקרי אמונתנו הוא שנותן התורה ומצוה המצוה, הוא הוא הבורא את העולם ומנהיגו בפועל גם עתה והוא הוא הזן ומפרנס לכל, והמסקנא מובנת.

ויהי רצון שלא יתפתה מדברי היצר וילך לבטח דרכו דרך המלך מלכו של עולם וילמוד בהתמדה ושקידה בתורת הנגלה ובתורת החסידות.
