To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Dovber (note: Rav D. Baumgarten of Buenos Aires, see letter no. 4767),
Greetings and blessings,
It seems to me that before your departure, it was specified — to you as well as to all those who were traveling abroad — that it would be good to take an interest in books of great value and rarity found in synagogues and houses of study, or perhaps even in the possession of private individuals. These books are not studied and no one takes an interest in them. They are the vestiges of past generations. One can therefore send them here in the proper manner, in exchange for books published by Kehot*, in accordance with the needs of that synagogue, house of study, or private individual.
The usefulness of this operation is twofold. On the one hand, these books will arrive here and in this way will finally be put to use. On the other hand, there will be, in that synagogue, works published by Kehot* — books of Chassidus*, Siddurim* of the Ari* rite. The books can be sent to the address of the library or the secretariat. Moreover, it is said that the mitzvah* of redeeming captives applies also to books (note: the books are themselves captives when they are in a place where they are not studied), when no one takes account of their presence.

... כמדומה שקודם נסעו דברו עמו כמו עם שאר הנוסעים לחו"ל שכדאי להתענין אודות ספרים יקרי הערך ויקרי המציאות הנמצאים בבתי כנסיות ובתי מדרשים ואולי גם אצל פרטים, שאין הלומד בהם ומתענין בהם כי נשאר לפליטה מהדורות שעברו, ולשלחם לכאן באופן המתאים (בחילוף ספרי קה"ת המתאימים לביהכ"נ ובית המדרש והאיש פרטי). והתועלת בזה כפולה, הספרים וכו' יבואו לכאן שסו"ס תבוא מזה תועלת, ובביהכ"נ וכו' יהיו ספרי קה"ת מספרי חסידות או סידורים בנוסח אר"י וכיו"ב. הספרים יכולים להשלח ע"ש הספרי' או ע"ש המזכירות וכו' ובפרט שע"פ המבואר בספרים יש בזה מענין של פדיון שבויים באם הספרים אין מתעסק בהם.
