Greetings and blessings,
You tell me about your wife and say that the doctors attribute the fact that she has not yet become pregnant to the observance of the laws of the Torah*. You surely mean that, according to those who were consulted, the most fertile day occurs before the end of the counting of the days of purity. It is no doubt to this that you allude.
First of all, many doctors contest the accuracy of such conclusions (note: see letter no. 5250) and even the foundations upon which they are based. It is only recently that such theories were advanced. Moreover, doctors consider that in general the discrepancy is only a day or two. Now, there exist treatments that shorten the menstrual period and therefore make it possible to remedy this situation, at least for a certain time — even according to their opinion. Generally speaking, one must consider with caution any treatment that modifies the menstrual cycle. But sometimes there is no risk, when one is followed by a specialist. In any event, it is unnecessary to tell someone like you that there is no reason to deviate from the principles and laws of the Torah*, or even of our Sages, on the basis of the opinion of these doctors. I am surprised that you did not tell me whether you consulted a doctor for yourself personally (note: regarding possible male infertility). You will tell me at the next opportunity.
In this regard as well, you know that the Holy One, blessed be He, acts "measure for measure" (note: in proportion to how one acts toward Him), but in greatly increased proportion. Now, it is said that "whoever teaches Torah* to the son of his fellow is considered as though he had given him birth." There is in this a favorable practice (note: see letter no. 5187) for having children, in addition to your son, to whom Hashem will grant long life.
With my blessing to convey good news of all this, and to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
