Greetings and blessings,

I have just received a pamphlet in English, entitled "Letter to the Diaspora," dated 8 Tammuz 5717, which is illustrated with your drawings. These had an effect on me, precisely because they are reproduced as they are, without embellishment — not even those of specialists. It would be good and judicious for you to create, in the same manner, a full album of Kfar Chabad* — not only in its current state, but also showing what it was when you arrived. In this way, one will see the development of the village and the pleasant aspect of its present form. Indeed, one is justified in hoping that it will soon develop even further. If this series of drawings is successful, it will be necessary to consider having them printed in the form of a postcard album, or as individual postcards. Above all, you must preserve in these drawings the simplicity that corresponds to reality, without being affected if someone tells you that a photograph does the job better and that a drawing is unnecessary. In fact, experience underscores the difference between the two — the drawing being the work of an artist, even if it remains very close to reality.

Of course, if expenses are incurred in creating these drawings, they will be covered by the specific fund, which will additionally pay you your salary for this work. I await your response and good news of all this. It is clear that I am not referring only to houses, but also and especially to drawings of the life of the village — from its most spiritual form to its most material activity. You surely have a fixed study session in the revealed part of the Torah* and in Chassidus*, in addition to the public classes in which you participate.

With my blessing to be inscribed and sealed for a good year, and to convey good news of all this,

ז"ע בא לידי מאמר מכ"ע אגרת לגולה (באנגלית מח' תמוז תשי"ז) בצירוף ציורים ממנו, שעשו עלי רושם דוקא ע"י שמצויירים כמו שהן - אן קונצען ואפילו אן קונצען אמנותיים, ומהראוי וגם מהנכון הי' - שבאופן כזה יצייר אלבום שלם של כפר חב"ד, ולא רק במצבו עתה אלא גם כמו שהי' בתחלת בואם לשם, בכדי שבאלבום זה יראו ג"כ התפתחות הכפר וכן עד"ז בתועלת צורת הכפר עתה, כיון שהתקוה שבקרוב יתפתח עוד יותר, ואם תהי' שורת ציורים אלו מוצלחה, יש לחשוב גם ע"ד קביעותם בדפוס אם בתור אלבום שורת-גלויות או גלויות בודדות, והעיקר כנ"ל שיבואו הציורים בפשטותם שבמציאות ולא יתרשם אם מי שהוא יאמר שהרי לזה מתאימה פוטו אין צריכים לציור, וכנראה במוחש החילוק בין פוטו לציור מעשה ידי אומן אפילו הנעשה באומנות הכי קרובה להמציאות.

מובן שבאם ישנם הוצאות הקשורים בהגשמת ציורים האמורים תשתלמנה מקופה מיוחדת ובזה גם שכר טרחה וכו' ואחכה למענהו בבשו"ט בהאמור.

ולמותר להוסיף שאין כוונתי רק להבתים וכיו"ב, אלא גם ובעיקר ציורים מחיי הכפר - מן חיים הרוחנים שברוחניות - ועד לחיים גשמיים שבגשמיות.

בודאי שיש לו שיעורים בנגלה ובחסידות נוסף על שיעורים הנלמדים ברבים שמשתתף בהם.
