Greetings and blessings,

It is quite obvious that there is no reason to fully justify the behavior of every Jew, whoever he may be, merely because one knows that he has performed good deeds. But conversely, may Hashem protect us from denigrating the action of a Jew — especially if that action is done publicly and concerns the public — solely because, in a second or third instance, that person did not behave as he should have.

Is there a more conclusive proof than that delivered by these days of Elul*? Our Sages* ordain that every Jew say, twice daily: "Hashem is my light and my salvation... Hashem, I call with my voice... be gracious to me and answer me." Now, if several people were to gather to forbid someone from uttering these words and to say, against him, the expressions found in your letter, I hope that you yourself (note: the recipient of this letter is a Rav who can be consulted for halachic* rulings) — if asked what the Halachah* is in this matter — would respond that their words have no meaning.

Of course, you are not obligated to heed my protest. Nevertheless, I do not make it on my own initiative. I base myself on the injunctions of our holy Torah*, particularly during Elul*, the month of mercy, which prepares for the judgment (note: of Rosh Hashanah*) and the Days of Awe, when "all creatures of the worlds will be brought to judgment." Hashem acts "measure for measure" (note: in the manner in which one acts toward Him), as our Sages* emphasize. This strengthens my protest, for each person must adopt the conduct that he wishes others to adopt toward him. And the Torah* rules that "what you hate, do not do to your fellow."

With my blessing to convey good news, to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
