Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you write that you wonder whether the instruction I gave you was indeed a response to the question you asked me. You will forgive me for using the same formulation as you: I wonder whether this has any connection to the question you asked me. The issue is not whether one can learn the Written Torah* by heart, which is indeed conceivable when a book is studied several times. Your question was, in fact, the following: Why does one not institute the study of the Written Torah* by heart, without a book? I therefore showed you that, according to the Halachah*, it is forbidden to do so. I even specified the primary source that establishes this, but this principle also appears in the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 49.

It is a pity to tire yourself citing all the examples you give — those of the Sages* of the Mishnah* and the Gemara* who mentioned verses of the Tanach* by heart. Indeed, in every synagogue you will find people who know the prayer Ashrei* by heart, not to mention the Shema Yisrael*. Yet everyone knows that these passages belong to the Written Torah*. However, as I said, one must distinguish between knowing a passage by heart and instituting that its study should proceed precisely in that manner. Indeed, such a practice is possible with the Oral Torah*, but not with the Written Torah*.

You write in your letter that you complete the entire Tanach* in two months. I am particularly surprised by this. How can you dismiss an answer before even understanding it? I send you my blessing to be inscribed and sealed for a good year.

כעת הרי חודש אלול ,וכמו שבכל השנה אינני אוהב לשאול קושיות,

על אחת כמה וכמה שאינני רוצה להאריך כעת בחודש אלול.
