Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you ask me whether the redemption has already begun or not. I am surprised by your question, bearing on something obvious, which is ruled upon by the Halachah* — specifically by our great master, the Rambam*, at the end of his Laws of Kings — basing himself on several verses of the Torah* and the Prophets, and on several teachings of our Sages*: "A king will arise from the house of David, versed in the Torah* and devoted to the mitzvos*. He will compel every Jew to follow its path and strengthen its observance. He will gather the exiles of Israel" — he and no other. You will consult this text, as well as his Laws of Teshuvah*, at the end of chapter 9. We currently find ourselves in an exile infinitely darker than before, for many of the great ones of Israel have departed this world. Moreover, the darkness itself is not enough — the vision has also been fulfilled in which "they pass off darkness for light and light for darkness."

May Hashem grant that, instead of asking me questions on this subject, you devote your time to studying, with enthusiasm and ardor, our holy Torah* — its revealed dimension and Chassidus* — as well as fulfilling the mitzvos* in the best possible way. Every action in this direction brings light to the world. And a little light dispels much darkness, thereby hastening the conclusion of this bitter exile. You surely know of the three daily studies pertaining to the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*. At the very least, you will adopt them in the future.

במענה על מכתבו בו שואל אם יש כבר אתחלתא דגאולה או לא.

ולפלא השאלה בדבר הפשוט ונפסק בהלכה ע"י המורה הגדול הוא הרמב"ם סוף הלכות מלכים מיוסד על כמה כתובים בתורה ובנביאים ורז"ל, שיעמוד מלך מבית דוד הוגה בתורה ועוסק במצות ויכוף כל ישראל לילך בה ולחזק בדקה (והוא דוקא) ויקבץ נדחי ישראל, עיי"ש, ובהלכות תשובה סוף פרק ט', ונמצאים עתה בגלות חשך כפול ומכופל עוד יותר מדורות שלפנינו, כיון שכמה מגדולי ישראל הלכות למנוחות וכו' ולא די בהחשך מצד עצמו, הנה נתקיים גם החזון דשמים חשך לאור ואור לחשך.

ויהי רצון אשר תחת שאלות בענינים האמורים, ינצל את זמנו להתמדה ושקידה לימוד תורתנו הק' בנגלה ובחסידות ויוסיף בהידור בקיום המצות, שכל פעולה כזו מוסיפה אור בעולם ומעט אור דוחה אפילו הרבה חשך ומקרב עי"ז קץ הגלות המר.

בטח יודע משלשת השיעורים דחומש תהלים ותניא בכל יום, ועכ"פ ישמור עליהם מכאן ולהבא.
