Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 13 Elul, in which you tell me that you wish to study the revealed dimension of the Torah* and Chassidus*. Nevertheless, you think you are unable to do so in the Holy Land, which you therefore wish to leave.

It is clear that there is a contradiction between the first and the last proposition. There is an injunction to study the Torah*, and this is dependent neither on the time nor on the place. Consequently, those who are there and do not study the Torah* do not refrain because they lack the ability, but rather because they succumb to the enticements of their yetzer hara* (evil inclination), which uses all manner of stratagems to convince a person not to put into practice the mitzvos* of the Creator — particularly the study of Torah*, which is considered by itself equivalent to all the precepts. How much more so regarding the study of Chassidus*, as the Kuntres Etz HaChaim* emphasizes. What purpose will leaving the Holy Land serve, since the yetzer hara* will accompany you? It is a pity to incur expenses and, first and foremost, to leave Eretz Yisrael*, which is permitted only in exceptional cases.

May Hashem grant that you recognize reality as it is — namely, that you fully have the means to study with enthusiasm and ardor, and that every day that passes without this enthusiasm and ardor is a loss that you will not recover. If you squander your time searching for a cause for the absence of study, you are performing a futile act, for that cause is singular. It is called the yetzer hara*. Even brief reflection, for a short moment, will enable you to establish this. May Hashem grant that it be so as soon as possible, and that you therefore set yourself to study at the earliest opportunity.

With my blessing to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

For the Rebbe shlita*,

the secretary,
