Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of Motzoei Shabbos* and I am surprised that you do not confirm having received my letter, which was a response to your previous correspondence. I have good hope, however, that you have fully put into practice the teaching of the Alter Rebbe* and that you have not followed the enticements of the evil one (note: the yetzer hara, the evil inclination). You know the saying of the Rebbe (note: the Rebbe Rashab*, see Igros Kodesh, letter no. 2887), father of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, according to which the yetzer hara* sometimes dresses in a silk frock coat. You will also consult the Hayom Yom*, under the date of 23 Sivan (note: see the previous letter).

The question you ask me in this letter is, indeed, surprising. You tell me that, insofar as there exists a mitzvah* of Yibum* (levirate marriage), you do not understand why — if it involves an older man and a young woman — he is advised to marry someone of a corresponding age, thereby modifying the will of Hashem. In fact, there is no modification at all, for in a case of Yibum*, when the ages do not correspond, the Holy One, blessed be He, Himself desires that the man seek a wife of a corresponding age. This is as if you were to ask: Why does a positive commandment override a prohibition? Why does a case of danger override Shabbos*? Why does one thereby modify the precepts of the Holy One, blessed be He? One could cite a very great number of examples.

No doubt, in the future, you will adopt the studies of ChiTaT*: Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, in addition to your other studies of the Torah* in general.

במענה למכתבו ממוצש"ק, ולפלא שאינו מאשר קבלת מכתבי מענה על מכתבו הקודם, אף שתקותי חזקה שעשה כהוראת רבנו הזקן ובמילואה ולא נתפתה לפיתויו של הקלוגינקער וכידוע פתגם כ"ק אדמו"ר (אביו של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר) שלפעמים מתלבש הוא היצה"ר בבגד של משי, ועייג"כ בהיום יום כ"ג סיון.

ובשאלתו במכתבו זה, שגם הוא תמוה, והוא אשר כיון שישנה מצות יבום, מדוע אמרו חז"ל שבאם הוא זקן והיא צעירה אומרים לו כלך אצל שכמותך, ומשנים רצון הקב"ה.

כי אין זה שינוי כלל, כיון שהכלך אצל שכמותך הוא ג"כ ציוויו של הקב"ה במקרה של יבום כשאין הגיל מתאים, וכאילו הי' מקשה איך זה עשה דוחה ל"ת, פקו"נ דוחה שבת ומשנים עי"ז ציוויו של הקב"ה, והדוגמאות רבו מלספר.

בטח עכ"פ מכאן ולהבא ישמור על שיעורי חת"ת (חומש תהלים תניא) נוסף על השיעורים בלימוד התורה בכלל.
