To Mr. Yedidya Alter (note: Mr. Y. A. Dinari, of Tel Aviv),

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of the 17th of Elul, in which you describe your duties within the military chaplaincy. Although you do not speak of it, you surely take advantage of your position not only to identify religious soldiers, but also to strengthen and encourage them. This is important for the Ashkenazim* and even more so for the Sephardim*. Very often, the smallest detail of their situation depends on this, in their lives.

I took interest in the work points you are preparing to establish for the religious soldiers. It would be good for you to speak about this with Mr. Leib Zalmanov (note: see, regarding him, Igros Kodesh, letter no. 5884), who is currently a shochet* in Bnei Brak. He previously served in the military chaplaincy of Tzahal* and is an active member of the Chabad* youth. It is said that "salvation comes through many counselors," and I have good hope that together you will be able to develop a detailed program in this area, based on the means currently available to the Chabad* youth, which will expand subsequently, one can hope. When you have more precise details, it may be possible for you to find additional revenue to finance this activity in other branches. It is a pity that the delivery of your letter was delayed, for at the end of Elul and in Tishrei*, there are several specific occasions to introduce and strengthen such actions. But in any case, one does not complain about the past.

Since you broach this point, it would be judicious to publish a summary of the important laws for the life of a soldier, especially in the Holy Land, if possible in a pocket format, to facilitate its use. I have observed that several laws were published in the journal Machanayim*, but it is clear that being scattered among different issues, they do not meet the need. In such a summary, a detailed analysis has no place. At most, one can indicate references. Of course, this abridgment of the Shulchan Aruch* must not be a collection of leniencies of the Law gathered from here and there. However, one is not referring here to wicked people, Heaven forbid, especially if its drafting is done in consultation with several Rabbanim*.

A particular problem will arise due to the diversity of customs. One can, however, be content to gather the laws accepted by all communities. This will meet a vital need, and there will surely be a continuation to all of this.

Some time ago, I had the opportunity here, in the course of a discussion, to emphasize that our Sages* make reference to those who are enlisted in the army, and they state, on this subject, that "the Torah* speaks in response to the evil inclination" (note: permitting, for example, a soldier to marry a captive woman, for since she is under his dominion, it will be difficult for him to master his evil inclination). It would seem to result from this that one could be lenient regarding certain practices when one is in the army. But the opposite is true. One who serves in this army must be even more scrupulous, increasing holiness, as it is stated: "Your camp shall be holy." I also emphasized that the source of holiness is our holy Torah*. I mean that one must study it with submission. And if this is so for all soldiers, how much more so for those who belong to the chaplaincy. They must "moisten themselves to the point of moistening others."

You conclude your letter by telling me that after your demobilization, you hope to be able to study more. I hope that your remark bears only upon the word "more" — because you will have more time — but that already now you do have a fixed time for the study of Torah*. Furthermore, you have become acquainted with Chassidus*, and no doubt you will also establish a fixed study of it. Moreover, you will influence your friends to do the same.

With my blessing to give good news of all this and to be definitively inscribed for a good year,
