Greetings and blessings,

You write to me about your son and you continually avoid mentioning the point that is, however, essential — namely, that while I did indeed finally give my agreement to his coming here (note: presumably to continue his studies at the Yeshivah* near the Rebbe*), there was an express condition to this. He was to improve his conduct significantly during this year. This was to provide proof that his journey here was justified. If such improvement does not manifest, it is clear that I maintain my previous position. As I explained to you at length when you were here, it is preferable that he remain where he is, near his parents. It is evident that this is my opinion for his true benefit. Consequently, and insofar as the condition has not been fulfilled, I am surprised that you persist in the effort to have him come here.

It is in these days (note: between Rosh Hashanah* and Yom Kippur*; see Igros Kodesh, letter no. 5787; this paragraph appears in letters addressed to several people) that one is definitively inscribed for a good year. Now, our Sages* say, "everything follows the conclusion." May Hashem therefore grant that this conclusion be a visible and tangible good, in all areas, material and spiritual. In joy and enthusiasm, you will employ your capacities to elevate the Tradition of Israel. You will forever maintain your youthful strength, for you are bound and attached to the One of Whom it is said: "The Ancient of Days sits." It is also said: "Attach yourself to His attributes" — that is, "just as He is merciful, be merciful likewise." This has the following consequence: "You who are attached to Hashem your Elokim* are all alive today."

...במ"ש אודות בנו שי', - הנה כל משך הזמן משתמט מלהזכיר העיקר, והוא אשר סו"ס הסכמתי לנסיעתו לכאן, הי' זה בתנאי מפורש באם במשך שנה זו תהי' הטבה ניכרת בהנהגתו, שרק זו תשמש הוכחה שכדאית נסיעתו לכאן, ובאם לא נראית הטבה זו, מובן שהרי נשאר הנני בדעתי מאז, שטוב לפניו, וכמו שאמרתי לו בארוכה בהיותו כאן, שימשיך להיות ב... בקירוב מקום להוריו שי', ופשוט שדעתי כן, מפני שלפי הנ"ל זוהי טובתו באמת, ולכן תמי' באם לא נתקיים תנאי האמור, ההתאמצות שדוקא יסע לכאן.

...וכיון שנמצאים אנו בהימים דחתימה וגמר חתימה ואמרו רז"ל שהכל הולך אחר החתום, הנה יהי רצון שתהי' החתימה וגמר חתימה בטוב הנראה והנגלה בכל הענינים הן בגשמיות והן ברוחניות, ומתוך שמחה וטוב לבב ינצל כשרונותיו אשר חונן בהם להרמת קרן ישראל סבא, אשר לנצח כח עלומיו בו כיון שקשור ודבוק הוא בזה, עליו נאמר עתיק יומין יתיב, ועל ידי קיום הציווי הדבק במדותיו מה הוא רחום אף אתה רחום כו' בא גם המסובב וכמ"ש ואתם הדבקים בה' אלקיכם חיים כולכם היום.
