To the young Avraham Abish (note: Rav A. A. Poruch Glickman, of Jerusalem; see, regarding him, Igros Kodesh, letter no. 4993),

Greetings and blessings,

You ask me about the source of the Alter Rebbe's* statement, in Iggeres HaTeshuvah* and also in Iggeres HaKodesh*, that one who attains teshuvah* and wishes to free himself from fasts and mortifications is not subject to the prohibition of giving more than a fifth (note: of one's income to tzedakah*, a limit that it is ordinarily forbidden to exceed).

The Alter Rebbe* explains it himself. He observes that the healing of the soul is no less than that of the body. It is stated: "A man gives everything he has to save his soul." Now, a logical argument constitutes indeed the most convincing source, as is established, in particular, in tractate Kesubos* 22a.

You ask me about a program of study of Chassidus*. You will consult, on this matter, the elder Chassidim* of your surroundings. They will guide you, for various points of detail must be taken into account in this area.

...ובשאלתו מקור דברי רבנו הזקן (אגרת התשובה שלו וכן באגרת הקדש) דבעל תשובה העושה לפדות נפשו מתעניות וסיגופים לא על זה נאמר שאל יבזבז יותר מחומש.

הרי מבואר הענין על אתר בדברי רבנו הזקן, דפשיטא דלא גרע רפואת הנפש מרפואת הגוף, דכל אשר לאיש יתן בעד נפשו כתיב. וסברא פשוטה ה"ז מקור היותר נכון (ראה כתובות כב, א. ועוד).

מ"ש אודות סדרי לימוד בתורת החסידות, יתייעץ בזה עם זקני אנ"ש אשר בסביבתו והם יורוהו, כיון שתלוי הענין בכמה פרטים ופרטי פרטים.
