To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of many accomplishments, Rav Meir (note: Rav M. Sharansky, of Tel Aviv),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter in which you refer to the purchase of the "trees" — of the tree of the Baal Shem Tov* (note: for which Rav Sharansky was requesting a financial contribution; this likely refers to a chapter devoted to the Baal Shem Tov in a broader work) — and to the immediate dispatch of the corresponding sums.
However, the state of the funds designated for publication and for activities of the type you propose is difficult, including for what concerns the publication of Chassidus* books, in particular those that are directly incumbent upon these funds — the works of Chassidus* Chabad*. A fortiori is this the case for everything that does not belong to this category. Despite this, since this request was made in your name, I enclose a check of a symbolic amount.
On this occasion, I observe, in the letterhead of your letter, the list of books of which you are the author, and I am surprised that they do not appear in my library. Authors of such works endeavor, indeed, to send their writings there, which is useful for the greatest number (note: all those who consult this library). Nevertheless, I already possess one of these books — volume 1 of the work entitled: "The Greats of Chassidus*."

במענה למכתבו בו כותב ע"ד קניית "אילנות" (אילן הבעש"ט) ושילוח למפרע את המגיע עבורם.
אבל מצב הקופות אשר כאן המיוחדות בעניני דפוס וכיו"ב, ענינים מעין אותו שכותב אודותו, קשה הוא, גם אפילו בהשייך להדפסת והו"ל של ספרי תורת החסידות, ואפילו בחלקם המוטל על קופות אלו ביחוד ז.א. תורת החסידות חב"ד ועניני', ומכש"כ להו"ל של ענינים החורגים ממסגרת זו.
לאחר כל זה, הנה כיון שפונים בשם כת"ר, מוסגרת בזה המחאה בסכום סמלי.
בהזדמנות זו: הנה נמצאה בגליון מכתבו רשימת ספרים שחיבר ולפלא שאינם נמצאים בהספרי' שלי, והרי בנוהג מחברי ספרים במקצוע זה להשתדל שיהיו ספריהם בהספרי' כאן, כיון שתועלת הרבים בה (מלבד ספר א', כמדומה - גדולי החסידות חלק א').
