Igrot Kodesh · Letter 582 — Consolation After the Histalkus — Shared Grief and Ongoing Presence

To my close relative, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

the Rav N.,[1]

I greet you and bless you.

I received your letter in its time. For an obvious reason, it was difficult for me to reply, including to your condolences.

Rabbeinu Yona[2] explains, in the third chapter, that consoling mourners is a Mitzvah* of the Torah and that mourners can console one another.[3]

At first glance, this may be surprising. How can one mourner console another, when he himself is in pain?

Nevertheless, the point here is to demonstrate to the mourner that he is not alone in his suffering, that there is also a second, and even a third person who wishes to console him. However, the affliction is so great that one does not know how to do so. And this in itself is already a form of consolation.

The Alter Rebbe explains, in his letter of condolences,[4] that the spirit of the one who has departed this world is truly among us. On the contrary, he is in this world even more than during his lifetime. By binding oneself to his ways, all this can be revealed.

The inner aspect of these practices is the necessity, for each man and woman, to take part in his work, to draw close and to unite, with love of Hashem, love of the Torah and love of one's fellow.

I am convinced that you yourself will continue to follow this path with even greater strength, for such is the need of the moment.

קבלתי מכתבו בשעתו ומטעם המובן קשה הי' עלי המענה אף על ניחום אבלים שבו.

איתא ברבנו יונה פ"ג דניחום אבלים מה"ת ואבלים עצמם ינחמו זה את זה.

והנה בהשקפה ראשונה אינו מובן, דבמה ינחם את חברו האבל, והוא בעצמו שרוי באבילות כמותו.

אבל זה עצמו שמראה להאבל שאינו בודד בצערו, ואשר יש שני ושלישי וכו' הרוצה לנחמו אלא שמגודל הכאב אינו מוצא במה לנחם, זה גופא נחמה היא.

ידועים דברי רבינו הזקן באגרת תנחומים שלו, אשר רוחו של זה שנסתלק עומדת בקרבנו ממש, ואדרבה אשתכח בזה העולם יתיר מבחיוהי ומקבלים זה ע"י התקשרות בדרכיו.

ונקודה הפנימית בדרכיו הלא הי' שכל אחד ואחת ישתתף בעבודתו הוא, מושלבים ומאוחדים ע"י אהבת השם אהבת התורה ואהבת ישראל.

ומובטחני אשר גם כ' ימשיך ללכת בדרך זו ביתר שאת ויתר עז, כי זוהי דרישת השעה.
