To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Avraham Chanoch (note 1: Rav A. Ch. Glitsenstein, of Lod; see on his subject letters no. 5392, 5906, 5941, and 5993),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letters. I have also received a copy of the second edition of the talks of Tishrei* 5717, prepared for the next Bitaon (note 2: the Bitaon Chabad, the organ of the youth of the Chabad association in the Holy Land), whose issue on the Omer* has, it seems to me, already been approved. In addition, I have also received the press clippings. Obviously, the month of Tishrei*, the period preceding it and the one following it, were not conducive to rereading the copy of these talks, nor even everything concerning the Bitaon. This will be done at the first opportunity, and any corrections will be sent to you.

You ask me about the following point that has been commented upon. The harvesting of the Omer* was less widely publicized than Simchas Beis HaShoevah* — the joy that marked, in the Temple, the moment when the water for the libations was drawn. Indeed, this harvesting began during the period when one serves Hashem in the manner of the Tzaddikim* (note 3: during the month of Nissan*), whereas the month of Tishrei* (note 4: when Simchas Beis HaShoevah* takes place) corresponds to the service of Hashem of those who attain Teshuvah*. You ask me what is the bearing of this difference, since in the present case, the sole purpose is to affirm the rejection of the position of the Sadducees (note 5: who do not accept the Oral Torah* and therefore Simchas Beis HaShoevah*, which it institutes).

In fact, the harvesting of the Omer* was also the subject of a discussion. This is why everything was then done and said three times, as explained at the beginning of chapter 6 of Tractate Menachos*. In fact, the difference lay in the joy of those who participated in these celebrations. Naturally, the joy of the prince who returns from captivity is more intense than that of the prince who was never captive (note 6: the former corresponding to the Baal Teshuvah* and the latter to the Tzaddik*) — if indeed one can speak of joy in that case.

It is said that a permanent pleasure is no pleasure. Furthermore, the Sadducees exert a much more reduced and weak hold within the four cubits (amos*) of the Tzaddikim*, who have never committed a transgression, than among those who attain Teshuvah*.

You refer to the free will of the other nations. According to what is stated in various Chassidic* texts, in particular the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas Emor*, page 35b, and the Chassidic* discourse entitled "The Honor of Your Kingship" (Kavod Malchuscha*), of 5660 (note 7: 1900), by the Rebbe Rashab*, one cannot truly speak of free will except regarding the Essence of Hashem, Who has no prior cause, and therefore regarding the children of Israel, who are the sons in relation to the Essence, the Father.

The reward and punishment of the nations of the world are justified in two ways:

A) These notions are employed concerning them only in a figurative sense, and they exist in the literal sense only among the Jewish people. It is, in fact, a relationship of cause and effect (note 8: between the good action and the reward, or the bad action and the punishment), as in the case of a child who would dip his finger in boiling water. One can, nevertheless, question what the Rambam* states at the end of chapter 5 of his Laws of Teshuvah*.

B) For the Mitzvos* that concern them — those of the descendants of Noach* — Hashem, in issuing the commandment, also opens two paths. He elevates them above their nature and enables them to have free will. This is what can be deduced from the statement of the Mishnah* that "the reward of a Mitzvah* is the Mitzvah* itself." When a great sage gives an order to an ordinary person, the latter becomes attached to him. And such attachment necessarily creates a commonality. This is self-evident.

In accordance with your usual practice, especially after your last letter, you have surely prepared and are sending to the press texts that can be published for the month of Kislev*, in particular the 19th of Kislev*, Rosh Hashanah* of the study of Chassidus* and of Chassidic* ways.

With my blessing for success in all of this and to convey good tidings of what has been stated,
