To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and carries out a sacred mission, Rav Shmuel Elazar (note 1: Rav Sh. E. Halpern, of Jerusalem; see on his subject letter no. 5484),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your two letters, in which you briefly describe your actions directed toward the most elevated purpose — the spreading of the wellsprings* (note 2: of Chassidus*) outward. This is in addition to what you accomplish in the preparatory class of the Yeshivah* Toras Emes*.

May Hashem grant that you intensify your sacred investment in this matter. According to the well-known expression, "one ascends in matters of holiness." But in this matter, one can distinguish different levels. One must therefore seek the greatest proportion, as our Sages* explain. For it is not sufficient merely to act. The action must also conform to what it ought to be. The very fact of asking that it be so furnishes proof that the possibility of achieving it has been granted. Everything depends solely on the will.

We are approaching Kislev* (note 3: see on this subject letter no. 5882), the month of liberation — the liberation of all who have merited to taste the study of Chassidus* and all that pertains to it, in accordance with the saying of our holy masters that the 19th of Kislev* is the Rosh Hashanah* of the study of Chassidus* and of Chassidic* ways.

The Alter Rebbe* and his son, the Mitteler Rebbe*, emphasize that the term used is "head" (rosh*) and not "beginning" of the year. Indeed, the head contains within it the vitality of all the limbs of the body. Likewise, Rosh Hashanah* carries within it all the days of the year. The period preceding it must prepare for it, and it is in this way that one can obtain the blessing. For our Sages* have informed us that by making, for Him, an opening as small as the point of a needle, one obtains one comparable to the gateway of the Sanctuary (Ulam*). And it refers specifically to the Sanctuary, which was distinguished not only by its size but also by the fact that it was permanently open. Indeed, there were no doors to close it.

With my blessing to convey good tidings of all this,

M. Schneerson,

You mention the custom of interrupting the groom who recites a Torah* commentary or a Chassidic* discourse (note 4: this follows letter no. 5726; on this subject, see also letters no. 5779 and 6007). This custom was presumably introduced so as not to inflict an affront upon one who is unable to recite it. You know the response of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, on this subject. The groom must recite the Chassidic* discourse in its entirety, then begin it again — and it is then that he is interrupted.

You also refer to the age of education. On this subject, you will consult the Laws of Torah Study of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 1, paragraph 6, which state: "from sixteen years to twenty-four years"!
