Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 23 Marcheshvan*. You announce good tidings, since you tell me that several undesirable neighbors have left their apartment and have been replaced by good neighbors. May Hashem therefore grant that you also announce good tidings regarding the other points you mention.

You also tell me that approximately one year ago, you purchased a house in another neighborhood, which causes you constant troubles. Such a situation is very common when one does not set aside the tithe (maaser*) — at least one-tenth of the income from this house — for Tzedakah*. If this is indeed the case for you, if until now you have not given Tzedakah* — and, as you know, our Sages* say that one does not calculate the exact amount, which means that one gives a little more than one-tenth — you must, of course, immediately rectify all of this. It would also be good to give now the tithe that you did not set aside during the past months. The Holy One, blessed be He, says regarding Tzedakah*: "Please, test Me in this matter," and our Sages* explain: "Tithe so that you may become wealthy." Without a doubt, this promise will be fulfilled in your case.

I hope that at least in the future, you will adopt the three well-known daily studies, covering the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*. My father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, emphasized many times that these concern every person and have a beneficial effect in various domains. As for your wife, she will observe the custom of virtuous Jewish women of giving Tzedakah* before lighting the candles on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ג מ"ח.

יהי רצון שכמו שמבשר טוב מאשר כמה מהשכנים בלתי רצוים עזבו הדירות, ויש להם דיירים טובים במקומם, כן יבשר טוב בשאר הענינים אודותם כותב.

ובמה שכותב אשר לפני שנה בערך קנה בית בשכונה אחרת... ותמיד לו צרות וכו'.

לפעמים רבות קורה בזה, כשאין זהירים בהפרשת מעשר עכ"פ מעשר לצדקה מהרוחים של בית זה, ואם גם בנדון דידי' כן הענין, זאת אומרת, שעד עתה לא הפריש מעשר (וידוע מאמר רז"ל שאין מדקדקין בצדקה -, ושלכן צריכים להוסיף עכ"פ מעט יותר על המעשר), מובן שלכל לראש צריך לתקן את זה, ומה טוב למלאות את אשר החסיר במעשר לצדקה בהחדשים שעברו, וכיון שהקב"ה אומר בהנוגע לצדקה ובחנוני נא בזאת, וידוע דרשת רז"ל עשר בשבית שתתעשר, בטח תקוים הבטחה זו גם בנדון דידי'.

תקותי שעכ"פ מכאן ולהבא ישמור על שלשת השיעורים של חומש תהלים ותניא הידועים, אשר שמענו כ"פ מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע אשר שוים הם לכל נפש וסגולה לכו"כ ענינים, וזוגתו תחי' תשמור על מנהג בנות ישראל הכשרות להפריש לצדקה קודם הדלקת הנרות בכל ערב שבת קדש וערב יום טוב.
