To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and carries out a sacred mission, Rav David Avraham (note 1: Rav D. A. Lesselbaum, of Kfar Chabad; see on his subject letters no. 3392 and 6090),

Greetings and blessings,

After a particularly long interruption, I received your letter of 27 Cheshvan* and took note with pleasure of the brief description of your activities during this month of Tishrei*.

As you write to me, you encounter from time to time Mr. Zerubavel. You no doubt know that in a certain milieu, he exercises a fairly broad influence. One should therefore take advantage of every meeting to motivate him. His undesirable actions stem essentially from the habits he has adopted and not from his current reflection or a deliberate position on his part. If you regularly point out to him the great harm, the destruction that results, when he could have used his capabilities to multiply the good in the world — in general and for the children of Israel in particular — your words will ultimately have an effect, for the truth must prevail, even if sometimes this takes time.

Obviously, in such a situation, the most important obstacle he confronts is the one to which the beginning of all four sections of the Shulchan Aruch* alludes: "One shall not be affected by mockers." Indeed, one understands the impact this (note 2: the modification of his behavior to put the Mitzvos* into practice) would have in all those circles. If he reflects on the outlook he has held until now and takes the decision to go in the opposite direction, the news will be spread without embellishment. However, from what is said, he has not really taken the majority view into account in the actions he has undertaken until now. And if this is so in the realm of suffering, how much more must he use his courage in the positive domain, proclaiming: "I was mistaken in everything I said before you until now." For if, regarding misfortune, our Sages* say: "Do not believe in yourself," how much more must this be so for a positive evolution.

May Hashem grant that you yourself feel no shame. You will tell him all of this with sincerity, and we have been given the assurance that words emanating from the heart penetrate the heart. Naturally, you may mention in the discussion that you are intervening based on what I have written to you, if you think this can have a positive contribution in this matter.

You may also add that he has surely had doubts for some time already, but strives to silence them and, as soon as they arise in his mind, to push them away — in accordance with human nature, which makes one apprehensive whenever one must question whether one has chosen an appropriate way of life. A particular courage is needed for this. But precisely because this man exercises influence over many people, an improvement in his behavior will be multiplied accordingly among those who follow him. He will therefore not retreat and will not be afraid to take stock again and again. Our Sages* emphasize that one who causes harm to himself is subject to no penalty only before the tribunal of men. This is not the case for one who causes harm to others. And to demonstrate to him that the time has come to critique the views he has previously adopted, you will remind him of the dream he had shortly after speaking to you.

You speak to me of your residence in Kfar Chabad* and the drawbacks that result from it. You will understand the contradiction in the fact that, in the same letter, you speak of the visit of your relative and what resulted from it. In accordance with the well-known saying cited many times by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, a soul descends to this world for seventy or eighty years solely to render, one time, a service — spiritual or material — to a Jew. How much more so for your home in Kfar Chabad*, where Hashem has commanded the blessing. It possesses, in any case, an immense elevation. Moreover, one Mitzvah* draws another, and such events can still occur.

You speak of a new neighborhood. One must establish the character of the candidates (note 3: to settle there). If there is nothing objectionable, you will be among these candidates yourself.
