To the young man Avraham Baruch* (note 1: A. B. Gabay),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I received, in its time, your letter regarding your trip to Chicago. Subsequently, I received news of you from the Chassid*, Rav Chaim Mordechai Aizik Hadakov (note 2: Rav Chaim Mordechai Aizik Hadakov, director of the Rebbe's secretariat) and Rav Ben Tzion Althuiz, who informed me that you have formed a group of students, which gave me pleasure. In this matter as well, you are surely putting into practice the imperative of ascending in the domain of kedushah*, by developing this group quantitatively — through the number of students — and qualitatively — through the content of the studies.

Indeed, these two dimensions are not always necessarily linked. I mean to say that one should not set as a condition that all participants have the required level, which would limit the accomplishment. For even the simplest Jew is also obligated to study Torah*. In my view, therefore, one should, on the one hand, increase the number of students, even if they do not have the required level, and on the other hand, raise the qualitative level whenever possible.

May Hashem* grant you success in your mission on behalf of others, which is a great principle of the Torah*, as Rabbi Akiva* says regarding the verse: "You shall love your fellow as yourself." It is in this way that you will obtain success also in what concerns you personally, in the material and spiritual domains.

It is surely unnecessary to remind you that one should prepare for the luminous day of 19 Kislev*, and you will undoubtedly convey all of this to your students.

בעתו קבלתי מכתבו ע"ד נסיעתו לשיקאגא, ואח"כ הידיעות ע"י הרה"ח וכו' וכו' הרחמ"א שי' חדקוב וכן ע"י הרב בן ציון שי' אלטהויז שסידר חוג תלמידים, מה שגרם לי קורת רוח. ובטח גם בזה מקיים מעלין בקדש להרבות החוג בכמות - במספר התלמידים - ובאיכות הלימודים, שלא תמיד מוכרח להיות הא בהא תליא, כוונתי שאין להעמיד תנאי שכל המשתתפים מחוייבים להיות תיכף באיכות הראוי', שעי"ז מגבילים העבודה, וידוע אשר אפילו אדם הפשוט שבישראל מחוייב בתלמוד תורה, אלא כוונתי שמצד אחד צריך להשתדל להגדיל מספר המשתתפים אף שעדיין לא הגיעו למדריגה הראוי' ולאידך גיסא, אלה המתאימים לכך צריך להשתדל להגדיל איכותם.

והשי"ת יצליחו בעבודתו לטובת הזולת, שהוא כלל גדול בתורה כמאמר רבי עקיבא על הכתוב ואהבת לרעך כמוך, אשר עבודה זו תביא הצלחה גם בעניניו הפרטיים בגשמיות וברוחניות.

בטח למותר להעיר לו ע"ד ההכנות ליום הבהיר י"ט כסלו ובודאי ימסור גם למושפעיו שי' עד"ז.
