may Hashem* grant you long life,

I am responding to your letter of 11 Kislev*, in which you write that you have been offered the opportunity to purchase a plot of land for a cemetery. You specify the advantages of this proposal. I am surprised that you do not mention a single disadvantage. Indeed, various texts, in particular the talk of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, of 19 Kislev 5694 (note 1: 1933), state that in all matters pertaining to this world, good and evil are intermingled.

I would like to know, in particular, whether there could be resentment regarding this matter from the leadership of the Orthodox community cemetery, which, it seems to me, offered and even asked you to join in their acquisition. I do not wish to emphasize this risk, for the proposal you describe is intrinsically good. It is therefore not a matter of taking a restrictive position — quite the contrary. You know my perspective regarding all that concerns the Chassidim*, in every place. As I have repeatedly stated to those in your city, there is an immense opportunity to multiply action in all domains. Yet this is being avoided, for particularly strange reasons.

It is clear that every action of the Chassidim* is not only judicious, but also positive and necessary. May Hashem* grant that in this matter, the statement of our Sages* be fulfilled — that one mitzvah* draws another. In this way, every achievement, even if one does not intend it, will develop all other domains, until knowledge increases and awareness follows. Development in all domains is not only possible but even indispensable. It will not undermine what already exists and, moreover, it will contribute to strengthening and extending it.

It follows from all this that, if the disadvantages are not clear, one should indeed endeavor to acquire this plot. And may it be that, in your days and in ours, the complete and true Redemption* arrive, and the promise be fulfilled that "I will remove the spirit of impurity from the earth and Hashem* will wipe away the tears" (note 2: Because of the abolition of death, which will render cemeteries unnecessary) — "He will revive us from two days, and on the third day He will establish us, and we shall live before Him." Then, the soul will be bound to the body in this material world, and the essential point — life will be eternal.

You will surely have arranged a Chassidishe farbrengen* on the luminous day of 19 Kislev* which approaches, in the fitting manner. Thus, the imprint of this Rosh Hashanah* will be preserved throughout all the days of the year, in thoughts, words, and actions, on a daily basis.

במענה למכתבם מי"א כסלו, בו כותבים אודות הצעה לקנות שטח קרקע לביה"ח וכו' והצדדים החיובים שבזה.

ולפלא שאין מזכירים באם יש איזה צד להיפך, והרי מובא בכ"מ ומהם בשיחת י"ט כסלו תרצ"ד של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, שאין דבר בעולם שלא יהי' בו תערובות טו"ר, ומה שמענין אותי אם אין בהנ"ל נתינת מקום לתרעומות מהנהלת ביה"ח של החרדים, שכמדומה כבר הציעו וגם בקשו שישתתפו בקניית ביה"ח שלהם וכו'. אין כוונתי להגדיל החשש, כי ההצעה אודותה כותבים במכתבם נכונה היא מצ"ע, ולכן אין להחמיר בזה ואדרבה, וכבר ידוע שיטתי בכל עניני אנ"ש בכל מקום שהם, ובהנוגע אליהם כפי שכתבתי זה כ"פ לאנ"ש שי' במחנם, שיש בידם אפשרית גדולה להרבות פעולות בכל השטחים, אלא שמפני טעמים מוזרים בתכלית אין עושים זה. ומובן שכל פעולה של החסידים לא רק רצוי' היא אלא טובה וגם מוכרחת, והלואי שבזה יקוים דבר משנה מצוה גוררת מצוה, שהישג אחד יגרום אפילו בע"כ התרחבות בכל שאר הענינים עד שתתרבה הדיעה ויבואו לידי הכרה, שההתרחבות בכל השטחים לא רק אפשרית אלא גם מוכרחת ולא רק שלא תגע בענינים הקיימים אלא עוד תסייע לביסוסם והתפתחותם.

המורם מהנ"ל, שבאם אין צדדים שלילים ברורים, יש להשתדל בקנין קרקע האמור ובימיהם ובימינו תבא הגאולה השלימה והאמתית ויקוים היעוד ואת רוח הטומאה אעביר מן הארץ ומחה ה' דמעה וגו', ויחיינו מיומים וביום השלישי יקימנו ונחי' לפניו הנשמה מאוחדה עם הגוף בעוה"ז. והעולה על כולנה - שיהי' חיים נצחיים.

בודאי יתועדו ביום הבהיר י"ט כסלו הבע"ל באופן הרצוי ויהי' רישומה של ההתועדות ניכר בכל ימות השנה של ר"ה זה במחדו"מ גם בחיי היום יומי.
