Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6116 — Chinuch
Volume 16 · Letter 345
By the grace of Hashem*,
17 Adar* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I am responding to your letter from this Friday, in which you ask me about the source of your soul, in the perspective of what is said in chapter 4 of the Tanya*. I have already responded, to a similar question (note 1: See Letter no. 6096), that a person must strive to accumulate the knowledge that helps him, that strengthens him in order to put into practice the mission entrusted to him in the world, in the terms of the Mishnah*: "I was created to serve my Creator." Now, this is not the case here. If so, what good would knowing it do?
You must devote yourself to study and do so with impetus and ardor, as the laws of Torah* study explain. This passage of the Tanya*, on the other hand, explains why not everyone understands in the same way. Moreover, the righteous who served Hashem* throughout their lives themselves had different perceptions. In fact, such a difference in understanding is precisely linked to the source of the soul.
I have learned, with satisfaction, of your participation in the public Tanya* class, but it is evident that this is by no means sufficient. In addition to this, you surely have personal studies every day, even for a relatively short time. May Hashem* grant that in this matter as well, the Injunction of the Torah* be fulfilled — that one ascends in the domain of holiness (note 2: By multiplying, in this case, the time of study). And, nothing withstands determination. You surely keep the three well-known daily studies — the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*. At the very least, you will adopt them in the future.
With my blessing,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
