Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6131 — Chinuch

Volume 16 · Letter 360 · To: profit de la ‘Hassidout.

By the grace of Hashem*,

24 Adar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your question (note 1: This letter is addressed to Rav Naftali Roth, of Jerusalem. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5367). It is evident that you must remain in the Yeshivah* you have attended until now and put into practice therein the Injunction: "You shall make efforts," so that the promise of our holy Torah* may apply: "They will be crowned with success." Insofar as possible, it would be good not to reduce the time devoted to the study of the revealed part of the Torah* (note 2: In favor of Chassidus*) in this place. You will consult the introduction to the Shulchan Aruch* of the sons of the Alter Rebbe*, underscoring the importance of this study of the revealed part of the Torah*. One can also deduce this from chapter 26 of Iggeres HaKodesh* and what is self-evident needs no demonstration. Moreover, you must acquire a youth rich in capacities and also in knowledge (note 3: The students of this Yeshivah*) for Chabad* Chassidus*. Every addition in this direction will increase the success of this immense accomplishment.

You make reference to the "Conversations with the Youth." One will write on this subject to the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav A. Pariz (note 4: Charged with their dissemination in the Holy Land). I read, with particular pleasure, what you say about the students of the evening Yeshivah* and the Chassidic* farbrengens* you hold with them. All those who devote themselves to this surely endeavor that the consequences of such farbrengens* have a concrete effect, naturally in accordance with the capacities of these students. Thus, their parents and their surroundings will also be influenced. You know, indeed, that the inner dimension of the Torah* is compared to oil, which permeates everything in contact with or connected to the point where this oil is deposited. This is self-evident.

I read with pleasure, in your letter, that you addressed the teachers and the rector of the Yeshivah* in a peaceful manner, but, naturally, without abandoning the essential point. One can concretely verify that by adopting a benevolent and friendly manner of acting, one is more effective than by all other means. Furthermore, such is the way of the Torah*, since "its ways are ways of pleasantness." You allude to a certain student. You ask me how and where he should continue his studies. One must, naturally, take counsel with the elderly Chassidim* who are on the spot, for this depends on various details concerning this student, his family, his surroundings. At a propitious moment, I will mention all those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. May Hashem* grant that you convey good news to me of your communal and personal concerns, always and every day, of a visible and tangible good.

In accordance with your request, this letter is sent to you by express mail and I add the following clarification (note 5: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5939), even though it is quite evident. The delay of a response from here is explained solely by my many occupations. For this reason, I endeavor to respond first to the persons and domains exposed to a gross error, to a significant worsening, or to resentment. It is not the same for those who are within, who, evidently, will not hold it against me or commit grave errors. I therefore respond to their questions secondarily, as was the case for the prayer of Shlomo*, whereas that of the children of Israel must satisfy several conditions in order to be answered. This is self-evident.

With my blessing to convey good news and to know immense success in all domains,
