To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

from a great lineage, the Rav M. Y.,[1]

I greet you and bless you.

I received your postcard with much delay. At your request, I sent you, by separate package, the booklets and the Chassidic sichos* that have appeared at Kehot Publications. You have no doubt received them now, and as you say in your letter, you will send some of your books to the library of Merkaz LeInyanei Chinuch. I thank you for it in advance.

I was able, for a few moments, to look at your book Rabbi Yisrael Baal Shem Tov.[2] I was unable to consult it for long, but it seems to me that in writing it, you did not have several sichos of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. Thus,

Page 3: You say that the Baal Shem Tov was born approximately in 5460 (1700).

Now, the family tradition establishes that he was born on 18 Elul 5458 (1698).

Page 5: You report the words his father addressed to him before leaving this world.

According to the family tradition, he asked him not only to fear Hashem, but also to love other Jews — which is one of the fundamental principles of the Baal Shem Tov's thought and conduct.

You say that he left this world on the first day of Shavuos.

You also say that we know practically nothing of the hidden tzaddikim and of the Baal Shem Tov before his revelation. We do not know, in particular, the discussion of Rabbi Adam[5] and his son.

On this, you may consult the following sichos[6] among those that are published: those of 20 Kislev 5693, of 18 Elul 5700, of 18 Elul 5701, of 18 Elul 5703, of 18 Elul 5705. You may also consult the letters from the archives published in the journal HaTamim, whose authenticity you recognize, since you cite them in your book on page 21 and other references as well.

Following a quick examination, I will also formulate a remark of general scope:

In your book, which is filled with teachings of the Baal Shem Tov, citations from his books and from those of his disciples, you also mention the professor Hopland, Lazarus Kant, M. Nordau. It is surprising to assert, for example, that the keys of the "great philosopher Kant" allowed one to decipher the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov for he who is "his disciple from always."

For a difference must be made between the Baal Shem Tov and Kant. Now, it is I who underline this, and this difference does not appear in your book!

A technical remark: the presentation of your book would have been enriched if there were, at the end of it, a bibliography and a list of your reference works.

בא לידי לשעה קלה, ספרו ר"י בעש"ט (ת"א תש"ט), ולא יכולתי לקרוא בו באריכות, אבל נראה שלא ראה בעת כתבו ספר זה כמה משיחות כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר הכ"מ.

לדוגמא: ע' 3 שהבעש"ט נולד קרוב לשנת ת"ס.

ידוע ע"פ המסורת במשפחה שהבעש"ט נולד ח"י אלול שנת נח"ת.

ע' 5 דברי אביו אליו טרם פטירתו:

ע"פ המקובל במשפחה א"ל לא רק ע"ד יראת השם אלא תומ"י ג"כ אדות אהבת ישראל אחד מעיקרי שיטת הבעש"ט והנהגתו.

יום הסתלקותו - יום ראשון דחה"ש.

חסרים כמעט לגמרי פרטים ע"ד צדיקים הנסתרים והבעש"ט קודם התגלותו.

ובפרט השקו"ט עם ר' אדם ובנו, ועוד.

וראה בכ"ז בהנדפסים שיחות: כ' כסלו תרצ"ג. ח"י אלול ש"ת. ח"י אלול תש"א. ח"י אלול תש"ג. ח"י אלול תש"ה. מכתבי הגניזה שנדפסו בהתמים (שסומך עליהם כיון שמביאם בספרו ע' 21), ועוד.

הערה כללית אגב ריהטא:

ראיתיו מביא בספרו הנ"ל המלא מפתגמי הבעש"ט ציטטות מספרי הבעש"ט מספרי תלמידיו... ומפרופסר הופלנאד, לזרוס קנט, מ. נורדוי, מפליא שהרז של "הפילוסוף הגדול קנט" גילה - להבדיל - הבעש"ט "לתלמוד ותיק שלו" ועוד כהנה.

ולהעיר שתיבת "להבדיל" היא משלי! ואינה בספרו -

הערה טכנית: לכאורה הי' מוסיף שכלול בספרו ע"י ביבלוגרפיא בסופו ורשימת ספרים שנשתמש בהם.
