Volume 17 · Letter 93

By the grace of Hashem*,

11 Iyar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

For some time, I have not received any letter from you, although, indirectly, I ask for news from your friends and I obtain it. No doubt you will therefore personally give me your good news. I say this because, very often, one does not write due to the lack of perfection in one's joy and enthusiasm, which are necessary elements for human existence. Now, as has been said several times, the precept: "In all your ways, know Him" applies to the twenty-four hours of the day, and the same therefore applies to the words of the Rambam*, at the end of his Laws of the Lulav*, according to which everything must be accomplished with joy. This is self-evident.

Moreover, we find ourselves between Pesach*, the time of our freedom, and Shavuos*, when one receives the Torah* joyfully. This injunction therefore applies even more clearly. Sometimes, one justifies one's lack of joy in various ways, including through reasoning that is not only rational but also finds its place within the logic of the domain of holiness. Nevertheless, when one lacks joy, one accomplishes nothing and repairs nothing. It is not the same if one adopts the opposite attitude. According to a well-known saying (note 1: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5100) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, a soldier going to the front first sings a victory march, which enables him to be victorious and to increase his success. Indeed, each one of us is not alone (note 2: See, on this subject, the Hayom Yom*, on the date of 22 Iyar*) and all receive the help of the Holy One, blessed be He. It is said, moreover, that "they come to the aid of the one who wishes to purify himself," and it is clearly stated: "they come," in the plural, for this aid takes many forms.

I hope that among your activities is also the need to become engaged, of course in the appropriate manner, that is, through friends who will serve as intermediaries. You will take into account the essential points, without concerning yourself with what is entirely secondary. By adopting this criterion, one often finds that these secondary elements are also satisfied. May Hashem* grant that you soon give me good news of all this. With my blessing to settle properly, with joy and enthusiasm,

On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,

the secretary,
