By the grace of Hashem*,

11 Iyar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To Mr. Menachem Shmuel (note 1: Mr. M. Sh. Raphaelovitch, of Jerusalem),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter of 4 Iyar*, in which you ask me whether it is true that the expression of the Alter Rebbe*, in his introduction to the Tanya*, "based on books," alludes to the books of the Maharal* of Prague. This is indeed the interpretation that the Chassidim* give when they study the Tanya*, in accordance with the teaching that was transmitted by the elderly Chassidim*, from one generation to the next. However, I did not hear this specification directly from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, although it is a trustworthy Chassidic* tradition.

Moreover, the expression "based on books and on authors" also appears in the introduction to the second part of the Tanya*, which is called "little education," and on the title page of this book. My father-in-law, the Rebbe*, told me, on this subject, that the words (note 2: Also appearing on this title page): "a work that is a collection of words... in a long and short manner, with the help of Hashem*" were composed by the Alter Rebbe* and they appear, in reversed order, in chapter 42 (note 3: Which says: "in order that one may know the greatness of Hashem*, according to the books and the authors"). In fact, this expression is also used by the Avodas HaKodesh*, of Rabbi Meir Ibn Gabay, fourth part, first chapter, and by the Shnei Luchos HaBris*, on several occasions (note 4: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "On pages 3b, 389a, and 389b"). It also appears in the manuscript of a Chassid*, and you will consult, on this subject, the Yerushalmi*, tractate Yevamos*, chapter 4, paragraph 11, regarding study and teaching.

You make reference to strengthening in Chassidus*. You will consult the writings of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, who deal extensively with this point, in particular the Kuntres Limud HaChassidus* and the Kuntres Toras HaChassidus*. This strengthening is essentially achieved through the words of the Mishnah* according to which "the act is essential," which means that one must study it abundantly and put it into practice. No day should pass without studying it and, during the holy Shabbos*, this study must be increased.

You surely know of the three well-known studies of Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, and you maintain them. As we have heard many times from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, these concern every person and they are favorable in various domains. With my blessing to convey good news,
