I am responding to your letter, whose delivery, before reaching me, was longer than usual. You tell me that you have moved into a new store, but, for the time being, you are unable to earn your living. You are a tailor by trade.

You surely know that one must set aside a tithe of one's earnings, especially when one has difficulty providing for one's needs. One must then increase one's contribution to tzedakah* and, in any event, give no less than a tenth. This tzedakah* will be given on multiple occasions. One of the propitious times to do so is the one that prepares the morning prayer, every weekday. It would also be good to have your Tefillin* checked. Furthermore, you will ask a Rav*, who will tell you whether it is necessary to place a mezuzah* on the door of your store. If so, you will choose a good mezuzah*, placed in the appropriate manner. If there is no reason to place a mezuzah* in your store, you will keep there, at least, a Siddur* and Tehillim*.

May the Creator of the world, Who directs it, broaden the means of your livelihood. You will intensify your study of our holy Torah*, within the framework of Tiferes Bachurim*, during your free moments, and you will influence your friends to do the same. The merit of the public will come to your aid. With my blessing to convey good news,

במענה למכתבו - שנתארך דרך הילוכו יותר על הרגיל עד שהגיע לידי - בו כותב אשר עבר לחנות חדשה, ולעת עתה אינו רואה הצלחה בפרנסתו והוא במקצוע - חייט.

מסתמא יודע מענין הפרשת מעשר מהריוח, ובפרט כשיש דוחק בפרנסה צריך להרבות בצדקה, אבל בכל אופן לא פחות ממעשר, ולחלק את הצדקה בכמה פעמים, ומזמנים המסוגלים הוא בכל יום חול קודם תפלת הבוקר. וכן מהנכון לבדוק את התפילין שלו, וישאל אצל רב, באם פתח החנות שלו חייב במזוזה, ואז יקבע מזוזה כשרה באופן הכשר, ובאם אין החנות חייבת במזוזה, אזי עכ"פ צריך שיהי' מצוים שם בחנותו סידור ותהלים.

ויהי רצון אשר ירחיב בורא עולם ומנהיגו פרנסתו ויוסיף בלימוד בתורה הק' תפארת בחורים בזמנים הפנוים וגם על ידידיו ישפיע שגם הם יעשו ככה וזכות הרבים מסייעתו.
