Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6249 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 17 · Letter 104
By the grace of Hashem*,
16 Iyar* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I am responding to your letter of 5 Iyar*, in which you tell me that you have joined the ranks of the young people of Chabad*, that you study Chassidus*, from time to time, and that you listen to talks. It is quite evident that one does not study any part of our holy Torah* in this manner. One cannot be content with a study from time to time, and you will consult, on this subject, the Yerushalmi*, at the end of tractate Berachos*, which says: "One who learns only from time to time..." — as if by chance, depending on what presents itself. Such an activity can only be incidental. This calls into question not only the knowledge of this part of the Torah*, but also the study and the success one has in all other areas, as our Sages* say in tractate Eruvin* 64a: "One who says that such an explanation is beautiful and that such another is not..." Such a person considers that the second explanation is indeed of the same rank as the first. He acknowledges that it is the Word of Hashem*, but he considers, however, that it is not beautiful, that it does not suit him. You will see the dreadful terms that this text employs regarding such a person.
I hope that at least in the future, you will have a fixed study of Chassidus*. As the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and halachic* authority of the hidden part of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and halachic* authority of the revealed part of the Torah*, demands, it will be fixed in time, but especially in the mind. In this way, you will strengthen your knowledge not only of Chassidus*, but also of the revealed part of the Torah*. You also mention your studies in the future. You will present all aspects of the question to three of your friends. Hashem* will suggest the right idea to them so that they can advise you. You surely know of the three studies of Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*. At the very least, you will adopt them in the future. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
the secretary,
