Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6250 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 17 · Letter 105

By the grace of Hashem*,

16 Iyar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter, in which you pose the following questions:

A) Does a young man of seventeen years have the right to deepen himself? You do not specify what you mean, but, from the context of your letter, it seems that you are referring to the moral duties of a Jew.

It is quite evident, and the Torah* decides the Halachah* in this sense, that this is not only permitted but even obligatory, as the Rambam* specifies in his Laws of the Foundations of the Torah*, chapter 1, paragraph 6: "Knowledge is an injunction of the Torah*." This is also what the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, states at the beginning of chapter 98. This latter text refers to prayer, which is an obligation for every person, three times a day, from the age of Bar Mitzvah*, and it specifies that one says it only after having meditated, beforehand, on the greatness of Hashem*, blessed be He. Now, this is not merely a matter of reflecting on words, but on ideas. To understand the greatness of Hashem*, one must meditate deeply on all that enables a person to become aware of it. Various books expound these concepts, in particular those of Chassidus*. You will endeavor to meet the great Rav* and Chassid*, Rav Nachum Shmaryahu Sossonkin, whose address is: "Shikun Rabbanim, Romema, Jerusalem." He will indicate to you the references for all of this.

B) You ask me how to acquire humility and how to put into practice the terms of the Mishnah*: "Be very, very humble..."

You will study, with all the necessary depth, the holy Tanya*, chapter 30, and you will also ask Rav Sossonkin on this subject. He will explain it to you and will add, furthermore, other specifications. You will do the same for the other points and questions that appear in your letter. You surely know of the studies of Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*. At the very least, you will adopt them in the future. With my blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,

the secretary,
