Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6251 — Tzedakah
Volume 17 · Letter 106
By the grace of Hashem*,
16 Iyar* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
After a particularly long interruption, I have duly received your letter, which was undated and to which was not attached the check that you mention. At a propitious moment, I will cite your name, that of your wife, and that of your son at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, so that each may obtain the satisfaction of their needs.
You make reference to an appendicitis. I do not understand why you must hasten to have this operation now. Is this what the physician recommends, or is it merely a suggestion? You also make reference to your material situation. You must find friends who will exercise a positive influence in the areas that trouble and disturb you. May Hashem* grant that success and effort be increased in these days separating Pesach*, the "time of our freedom," from the giving of the Torah*, which is approaching, "engraved upon the Tablets." And, our Sages* say, on this subject: "Do not read charut (engraved) but cheirus (freedom)."
It is quite evident that you must finally assume your true role, which is that of every Jew, defined by the Mishnah*: "I was created to serve my Creator," by spreading "the candle that is a mitzvah* and the Torah* that is a light," as well as the luminary of the Torah*, that is, Chassidus* and all that pertains to it, in every place where you exercise your influence. Moreover, you find yourself in a place where the teaching of Chabad* has been very little spread until now, relative to the possibilities that present themselves, even if people from the outside constantly proclaim that such and such are found on the spot, "pillars of iron for all that concerns Chabad*." It is clear that this character must manifest itself in an area as important as the spreading of the wellsprings, requested by our masters in every generation, in particular by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, in ours. This is self-evident.
May Hashem* grant that you give me good news of all this, of what concerns you personally and of your communal achievements. For, nothing withstands the will. With my blessing to convey this good news,
M. Schneerson,
