Volume 17 · Letter 155

By the grace of Hashem*,

Isru Chag* Shavuos* 5718,

Brooklyn, New York,

To all those who lend their support or take part in the eighty-third annual banquet (note 1: See, on this subject, the Sefer HaToldos Chabad BeArtzos HaBris*, at page 130) of the synagogue and study house Anshei Lubavitch* (note 2: "Those originating from Lubavitch") of Chicago, may Hashem* grant you long life,

Abundant blessings and greetings,

I have learned with satisfaction of the holding of the above-mentioned banquet, whose purpose is to strengthen and broaden, in all domains, the synagogue and study house Anshei Lubavitch* of Chicago. We have just lived through the days of Shavuos*, time of the giving of our Torah*, which the Jews received with holiness, awe, and deference, after having offered the necessary guarantees, as it is said: "Our children will be our guarantors." Now, one must constantly keep in mind the fact that the giving of the Torah* must be daily and that it indeed is. In fact, the blessing (note 3: Of the Torah*, recited each day) specifies that Hashem* "gives the Torah*," in the present tense.

All of this will arouse enthusiasm and vigor in the sacred task of building, strengthening, and broadening the place where all of this will take concrete form, in the best manner, that is, a synagogue, a study house, and a school for Jewish children, precisely those who are our guarantors.

Without a doubt, this will increase the blessings of Hashem*, as before and forever, including in personal concerns. May Hashem* grant happiness to all those who take part in this sacred mission, as well as great success in all that has just been said. With my respects and my blessing,

By the grace of Hashem*,

Isru Chag* Shavuos* 5718,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the women's section of Brownsville, East New York, of the Yeshivos* Tomchei Temimim* Lubavitch, may Hashem* grant you long life,

Blessings and greetings,

I have learned with pleasure that your next annual meal will take place on Sunday, 20 Sivan* next. I hope that your dear participants and guests will attend this mitzvah* meal, being under the effect of the festival of receiving the Torah*, which we have just celebrated and whose influence must be felt throughout the year. For, the festival of Shavuos* receives a specific dimension for Jewish women, as the Megillas Rus* underscores. Indeed, it does not bear the name of Boaz*, who was at the time the leader of the Jewish people, a descendant of Yehudah*, son of Yaakov*, but rather that of Rus*. The Torah* thus underscores, for all times and all places, the preponderant role incumbent upon Jewish women, when they are conscious of what they must accomplish within their home, their surroundings, and the entire people of Israel and when they use their abilities for this purpose. It is thus that they build a true Jewish home, comparable to that of Rachel* and Leah*, thus laying the foundations of the complete redemption.

It is unnecessary to emphasize that one of the principal missions of the Jewish woman, in particular in our era and in this place, consists of contributing to the education of the young generation, giving it a good education based on sacred values. The importance of your action is quite evident. I therefore have good hope that your achievements will go on expanding, in all domains, quantitatively and qualitatively. And, the Almighty does not remain in debt. Every addition in this direction will therefore, without a doubt, bring increased divine blessings for each of you and for the members of her family, materially and spiritually at once. With my blessing,
