I am responding to your letter of 14 Sivan*, in which you note, in passing, that you have, on various occasions, asked me questions without receiving answers. It seems that you are surprised by this. Now, in my view, a Yeshivah* must be conducted by those who direct it, so that one addresses another continent only for difficult questions. On the other hand, there is no reason to submit to the other continent the problems that should precisely be resolved on the spot.

The same applies to the content of your present letter. Each student is, by himself, an entire world and one cannot, in this matter, establish rigid rules and freeze the attitude one must adopt toward each category. Moreover, for each of these students, one must take into account the influence exercised on the other students. In fact, there is, in your letter, an obvious contradiction, since you write that they are Chassidim*, and therefore one cannot dominate them. Yet, there are, in particular, the laws of Torah* study, of the Alter Rebbe*, as well as many letters of our masters. It is therefore quite evident that each student must receive a specific response. Concretely, it is for you to decide, as I have said, without ruling on categories, but indeed on individuals, with all that this implies.

במענה למכתבם מי"ד סיון, שבדא"ג מזכירים שאיזה פעמים פנו אלי בשאלתם ולא נענו, וכנראה שפלא בעיניהם הדבר, ולדידי הרי הישיבה צריכה להתנהל ע"י הנהלתה אלא שדבר הקשה יש לשאול מעבר לים, אבל לא להתחיל בשאלה מעבר לים בענינים שדוקא על אתר יש לפותרם, וה"ה בנוגע לתוכן מכתבם זה, שהרי כל תלמיד עולם בפ"ע הוא, ואין לקבוע מסמרות ולהציג קו הנהגה אחד לכל הסוג, וגם בהנוגע לכל תלמיד יש להתחשב בהשפעה שתהי' בזה על שאר התלמידים [והרי מובנת הסתירה שבמכתבם עצמם, שכותבים שחסידים הם ואי אפשר להשתלט עליהם, והרי ישנם הלכות ת"ת לרבנו הזקן כו"כ מכתבים מרבותינו נשיאנו ועוד ועוד], אלא שמובן שלכל תלמיד צריך לענות בפ"עו
