Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6373 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 17 · Letter 229 · To: jeune Its’hak(1)
By the grace of Hashem*,
7 Tammuz* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the young man Yitzchak (note 1: I. Ohayon, of Agadir, Morocco. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5328),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 2 Tammuz*, in which you tell me about the Shabbos* recreational afternoons and the preparation for the vacation. I read with pleasure that you intend to expand the study of our holy Torah* during this vacation. The benefit of all this is quite evident, and one must therefore invest all the necessary efforts so that this project comes to fruition. May Hashem* grant that you achieve success, which will, of course, multiply the blessings of Hashem* and your success in your personal concerns, in particular your advancement and your success in your own study of the Torah* and in your practice of the mitzvos*, in the best manner.
You tell me that some people agree to study with you on condition that you make no reference to concrete action. I am surprised by such a condition. You can, indeed, explain to them that even if you envision concrete action, they themselves retain the freedom to do as they decide. They will therefore lose nothing from such words. On the contrary, they can only gain, for perhaps they will thus receive new ideas, explanations of which they are not yet aware, which will allow them to have a more precise approach.
In any case, it is clear that one must teach the Torah*, even to such people, since it is a mitzvah* in its own right that must be put into practice. You cite the teaching of our Sages* regarding a disciple who is not worthy (note 2: And to whom one should therefore abstain from teaching the Torah*). The Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and decisor of the hidden part of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and decisor of the revealed part of the Torah*, addresses this subject in his Laws of Torah* Study, chapter 4, paragraph 3, and in the Kuntres Acharon*. And he concludes that a disciple who is not worthy is nonetheless obligated to study the Torah* and the Rav* (note 3: Must teach it to him) if it is impossible to do otherwise. However, if one can bring him back to better sentiments by not letting him enter the house of study, one must first push him away. The Alter Rebbe* makes the same statement regarding one who mocks the mitzvos*, who has no fear of Hashem*, who does not put into practice what he has studied, although he has knowledge of the precepts. How much more so is this the case for the people to whom you allude, who surely act thus out of lack of knowledge.
You also ask me about the necessity of teaching the Torah* without compromise. You fear that if you adopt too rigorous a position toward the children, they will accept nothing at all, which would argue the case for these compromises. Precisely regarding such children, it is necessary not to compromise, not to tell them that one can transgress some mitzvos*, which Hashem* forbid, on condition of observing others. First of all, it is forbidden to lie. Furthermore, this would be a teaching of the Torah* that is not in conformity with the halachah*, a modification of the faith. One must therefore show the children, explain to them that for now one is teaching them such-and-such a mitzvah*, but that there exist others. Nevertheless, it is impossible to learn them all at once. One therefore proceeds step by step. You will also speak to them about teshuvah*. If someone has succumbed to the test, which Hashem* forbid, and has not acted properly, he remains, as before, obligated in all the mitzvos* of the Torah*, for "even if he sins, he remains a Jew." Subsequently, it is possible to repair through teshuvah*.
At a propitious moment, I will mention your name at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, so that you obtain the satisfaction of your needs. With my blessing to convey good news,
