Volume 17 · Letter 232

By the grace of Hashem*,

8 Tammuz* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter, in which you describe in detail your situation as you see it. You are quite right to write, at the beginning of your letter, that it is a pretext, a justification, and that you were told that even if it were true, your study of the Torah* would not be strengthened by it. And nothing resists the will.

You specify the source of your discouragement. But the explanation of all this has already been given by the Tanya*, which comments on the statement that "weeping is on one side and joy on the other," emphasizing that there is no contradiction in such a situation and that above all, this knowledge is but a means of reaching the purpose of Torah* study and the practice of the mitzvos*. The means of achieving this, the path of truth about which you inquire, consists of engraving in one's mind and memory the words of the Alter Rebbe*, at the beginning of chapter 41 of the Tanya*: "Hashem* stands before him..." It would be good to memorize the beginning of this chapter up to the word "HaMelech*" (the King), which is on the following page. The awareness of this should inspire joy in the heart of every person. Indeed, the Tanya* cites the example of a great king who dwells with the most humble and modest person, as it specifies in chapter 33. Of course, through this shared dwelling, one receives the strength to have conduct conforming to the will of the king. The Shulchan Aruch* explains all of this in the finest detail, including in permitted matters, devoting an entire chapter to this subject in the Orach Chaim*, at chapter 231, in accordance with the principle: "In all your ways, know Him."

May Hashem* grant that you cease thinking about the conduct that such-and-such a person adopts toward you. Know that you find yourself in a ray of light, at the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*, that you find there a complete Torah*, its revealed part and its deep teaching. If you truly desire it, you have the certainty of achieving success in the three domains of Torah*, prayer, and good deeds, upon which the world rests — in the literal sense — as does the small world, which is man. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,
