Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6383 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 17 · Letter 239 · To: dirigeants du séminaire Beth Rivka et à l’association
By the grace of Hashem*,
11 Tammuz* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the directors of the Beis Rivka* seminary and the parents'
association of the seminary of Kfar Chabad*,
where Hashem* has ordained the blessing,
may He grant you long life,
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your letters and the reports of the administration and the parents' meetings. I read with pleasure that you have all recognized, with unanimity of hearts and with one voice, the necessity of strengthening, at the seminary, the Jewish and Chassidic* education beyond what was practiced until now, of intensifying the sacred studies there. Consequently, you are seeking appropriate teachers, whose fear of Hashem* precedes their wisdom, for, of course, all of this depends on the teaching staff.
Accordingly, each of the directors and parents will do everything in his power to acquire the means for this. If, in every place and at every time, our Sages* have said that "if you make efforts, they will be crowned with success," how much more so is this the case in our days, when one can observe the success of an action undertaken for the Torah* and the fear of Hashem*, provided one devotes oneself to it wholeheartedly and with the appropriate enthusiasm — all the more so in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt by our righteous Mashiach*, where all of this is particularly necessary. Therefore, every effort, every intervention in this matter is justified.
Given the immense importance of all this — I mean everything that concerns education — since a development acquired by the student will be maintained subsequently, throughout her entire life, it is therefore quite evident that there is no room at all for considering what sows doubt regarding the fear of Hashem* and traditional Judaism, nor even the "doubt of a doubt," in a situation involving a danger of life or death, which is also forbidden. Basic logic and human rationality allow one to establish this.
You will deduce from what has just been said what my position is concerning books that are doubtful from the standpoint of the fear of Hashem* and, likewise, teachers of whom one may wonder whether they will know how to instill this fear of Hashem* in their students. For further precision, I will add another point. As I have said, one must set aside such books and such teachers, even in the absence of any other choice, precisely because there are no others. Indeed, the directors and, of course, the parents must ensure that the students remain faithful to Hashem* and to His Torah*. This is their happiness, material and spiritual. However, it should be possible, at the present time, to find teachers and study books that are irreproachable from the standpoint of the fear of Hashem* — to use the expression you employ in your letter — and whose level will be suitable.
There are now several Beis Yaakov* schools in our Holy Land. The period of beginnings, of hesitations and doubts, has passed. On the basis of the experience of several years, a solution has been found to these questions. The Beis Rivka* seminary can surely benefit from the experience thus accumulated. According to what you write to me, you yourselves have decided, unanimously, that the fear of Hashem* must precede wisdom, as the Sages* affirm in the Mishnah*. It is surely unnecessary to specify that this priority is not only in time but also in quality, which means that when one must make a selection between teachers and books, choosing between the fear of Hashem* and wisdom, one will give priority to the former, as has been said. Likewise, regarding the points you mention, the subjects for which a better level of study should be obtained, this does not mean, of course, that one should lower this level when it does not concern the fear of Hashem*. Assuredly, you will all agree on this matter. And, therefore, it is somewhat surprising that you speak of it in your letter as if there were a doubt on this subject.
Likewise, your letters do not clearly define the secondary school program that you mention at several points. Now, the seminary has just been created and, despite this, it is meeting with success, at least in a relative manner. There is therefore no reason to make it into a secondary school. It seems to me I have already written to you that this does not suit me at all. The seminary must indeed take the form of a training school for teachers and kindergarten educators. In our days, such a seminary is particularly important. You say there is a risk that the relevant authorities might not accept teachers who are not holders of the baccalaureate. But there is a good chance that one will witness an evolution in this domain as well. Above all, even in the absence of such accreditation, teachers and kindergarten educators have a particularly broad field of action. As has been said, what is essential, what matters above all, is that these teachers and kindergarten educators be fully suited to their mission, which is of the highest importance. One must therefore not reduce, even somewhat, their suitability for all of this by modifying the study program or the appearance of the seminary.
One confers merit upon days that are by nature propitious. Now, I write the present letter on the eve of 12 and 13 Tammuz*, days of the liberation of our master and our head, who fought, despite the veils and the difficulties, for the victory of traditional and Chassidic* Judaism, of the complete Torah*, who achieved an evident victory, obtained before the eyes of all, though it had been inconceivable according to the ways of nature. Now, "the body follows the head," and every Chassid*, attached or bound to him, must therefore follow the path he showed us, especially in domains for which there is absolutely no need to give of one's own person. It suffices, indeed, to offer one's animal soul, to be wholehearted with Hashem*, Creator of the world Who directs it, granting His Providence to all. Thus, the heart of each man and each woman will be whole in following the way of the Torah* and the Tradition, illuminated by Chassidic* clarity and warmth, in turning aside from and preserving oneself from every deviation, every doubt, the "doubt of a doubt," regarding the firmness and purity of all this. Without a doubt, the blessings and the success of Hashem* will multiply, so that one may attain the objective set, with breadth of spirit and in true happiness, materially and spiritually.
Regarding the subject of our discussion, the parents, the teachers, and the directors will derive from all the students of the seminary much true satisfaction, a Jewish and Chassidic* satisfaction. Justly and with the pride emanating from the domain of holiness, you will be able to say: "See those whom we have formed." With my blessing to convey good news of all this and on the occasion of the festival of liberation,
