Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 11 Tammuz*, in which you describe your situation — the debts you have contracted to obtain the apartment you acquired some time ago. And you do not know how to free yourself from this vise. You therefore envision selling this apartment and buying a smaller one. Now, as you yourself remark, a significant loss will result from this. Furthermore, concrete experience has shown that one does not free oneself from debts in this manner. Another point, which is essential: when one has resided in a place for a certain time, as is the case here, moving into a smaller house causes discouragement, as one can deduce from the positive effect in this regard (note 1: Of the satisfaction generated by moving into a larger house). And our Sages* cite the three elements that confer breadth of spirit upon a person (note 2: As it is stated in the tractate Berachos* 57b: "Three elements confer breadth of spirit upon a person — a pleasant house, a pleasant wife, and pleasant affairs").

Consequently, one should endeavor to obtain a loan for a longer term, with more favorable repayment conditions. In this way, little by little, you will preserve yourself from outward constriction and from all the superficial elements, without calling into question your inner dwelling and the breadth of spirit that flows from it, as has been said. May Hashem* grant that you invest your efforts, with all the necessary eagerness, in the three elements cited by our Sages*, in their spiritual dimension, expounded by the Tikkunei Zohar*, in Tikkun* 6, page 22b, which says that the "pleasant house" is the heart, the "pleasant affairs" are the limbs of the body, and the "pleasant wife" is the soul. You will therefore consult this text. And it is in this way that you will attain true breadth of spirit.

I hope that you have a fixed time for studying the deep teaching of the Torah* which, in our era, has been revealed through the commentaries of Chassidus*. Indeed, the necessity of this study is established by Iggeres HaKodesh*, chapter 26, of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and decisor of the hidden teaching of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and decisor of the revealed part of the Torah* — or, more precisely still, by the grandson of his grandson, who was also his successor, the Rebbe Rashab*, in his Kuntres Etz HaChaim*. All their holy words are based on the explanations of Rabbi Chaim Vital, in his introduction to the Shaar HaHakdamos*, reproducing also what the holy Zohar* says on this matter. You surely have knowledge of the three fixed studies, concerning the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*. As we have heard on many occasions from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, these concern everyone and they have a favorable effect in various domains. במענה למכתבו מי"א תמוז, בו כותב אודות מצבו בהנוגע לחובות שנכנס להם בקשר עם לקיחת הדירה לפני זמן, ועומד בתמי' איך לצאת ממצוקה זו.

אבל מובן שהקס"ד שכותב למכור דירתם עתה ולקחת דירה יותר קטנה, הנה מלבד שכפי שמזכיר גם הוא במכתבו, כרוכה בהפסדים נכרים וכפי שהראה הנסיון עי"ז גם לא יוצאים ממצוקת חובות, עוד והוא העיקר שלאחרי שגרים כמה זמן בדירה כמו עתה, הרי העתק לדירה יותר קטנה, מביאה לנמיכת רוח וכו' וכמובן מהתנועה לטוב בזה וכמר[ז"ל] שלשה דברים מרחיבין דעתו של אדם.

ולכן צריך הי' להשתדל להשיג הלואה לזמן ארוך יותר ובתנאי תשלומין נוחים יותר ועי"ז יוכל לאט לאט לצאת מן המצוקה אשר בחוץ ובענינים חיצונים מבלי לנגוע בדירתו בפנים ובהרחבת הדעת הקשורה בזה כנ"ל.

ויהי רצון אשר ישתדל במרץ הדרוש בג' דברים המוזכרי[ם] במאמר רז"ל האמור בהענינים ברוחניות וכמבואר בתקו"ז תקון ו' (כ"ב ב) דירה נאה, לבו. כלים נאים, אברים דילי. אשה נאה, נשמתו, יעויין שם, שאז באים להרחבת הדעת אמיתית.

תקותי שקובע עתים בלימוד פנימיות התורה אשר בדורנו נתגלתה בתורת החסידות, ובפרט ע"פ המבואר בהכרח הדבר באגה"ק סי' כו' לרבנו הזקן בעל התניא (פוסק בנסתר דתורה) והשולחן ערוך (פוסק בנגלה דתורה) ובפרטיות יותר לנכד נכדו מ"מ כ"ק אדמו"ר מוהרש"ב בספרו קונטרס עץ החיים, ומיסודי דבריהם הק' הלא הם דברי הרח"ו בהקדמתו לשער ההקדמות ושם מועתק ג"כ לשון הזהר הק' בזה.

בודאי יודע משלשת השיעורים דחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים, אשר כ"פ שמענו מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע אשר שוים הם לכל נפש וסגולה לכמה ענינים.
