Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6401 — Health

Volume 17 · Letter 257 · To: final

By the grace of Hashem*,

16 Tammuz* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Blessings and greetings,

I have not received a letter from you for a very long time already. I can, admittedly, grant you mitigating circumstances, on account of what unfortunately occurred. But, according to a well-known saying, mitigating circumstances intervene solely to grant a person a reward or a punishment. On the other hand, nothing concrete follows from them regarding what a person must accomplish toward himself, toward those close to him, toward his family, in the most immediate circles as well as the most distant, toward all Jews in general. Ultimately, such are indeed the purpose of man and his true desire. One cannot be satisfied with what is done, seek the easiest position, even if it suffices to receive the best reward. One must see to it that one acts in every possible way, as I said above.

If this is so for each man and each woman, without one knowing what they can accomplish, how much more is it the case for those who have already done much, whose success has been observed, whose accomplishments have been positive for an entire group of people in various domains. All of this then appears much more clearly, and this is indeed the case regarding you. Indeed, you have been able to observe the positive result of your action among the Chabad* women. I write all of this to you because I consider that the absence of news on your part stems from your lack of activity. I would therefore like to add another point. The event to which I was alluding — the passing of your brother, the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, of multiple accomplishments — must lead you to multiply your activity and your accomplishments. Indeed, all Jews believe that the soul is immutable. This is so evident that even non-Jews accept the veracity of this principle.

It is therefore quite clear that one does not attach oneself to flesh and bones, but to the soul, which one observes through the body. Consequently, even if the bond between the soul and the body has reached its end, one can still, through one's good deeds, bring about the satisfaction of this soul. Indeed, one can do so more broadly and more deeply, for this soul, having been freed from the body, no longer suffers its limitations. On the contrary, it then obtains what it could not have while still in the body, due to its limits. Indeed, it even becomes sensitive to the most discreet accomplishments. I hope that what has just been said will suffice to clarify the conduct you must have now. If your actions until now have been "good for the heavens and good for the creatures," it is now imperative not only to continue them but also to expand them, quantitatively and qualitatively. Your own action and the influence you will exercise on others will bring about the satisfaction of the soul of the departed.

We have just lived through the days of the festival of liberation, 12 and 13 Tammuz*, during which one was able to observe the victory of the Torah* and the removal of the darkness of exile. May Hashem* therefore now reveal the liberation from all that is an obstacle. In good health and with breadth of spirit, you will multiply your positive actions, in order to illuminate the darkness of exile. I hope to receive, by return mail, good news of all that has been said. With my blessing,
