To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, of multiple accomplishments and good sentiments, Rav Aryeh Leib (note 1: Rav A. L. Gelman. See, on his subject, Letter no. 865),

Greetings and blessings,

I have learned, through the press, that you have reached your seventieth birthday and, on this occasion, I address to you my blessing that Hashem* lengthen your days and your years, in a positive and pleasant manner. You will use the capacities that Divine Providence* has granted you and you will fully benefit from the influence you exercise, in accordance with the statement that: "The Torah*, Israel, and the Holy One, blessed be He, are one" — not only in opinions, but also in daily action.

All agree in recognizing that the Creator is the true and absolute Existence, that no concession is conceivable in this matter. Indeed, either one believes, with pure faith, that He exists and that there is none other than Him, or, if this faith is not complete, it is not that at all (note 2: And everything is then called into question). The same is true for the Torah*, which also does not suffer compromise. This is also the case for the people of Israel. Certainly, our Sages* say that "even if he commits a sin, he remains an Israelite." Nevertheless, this does not mean that the sin is thereby minimized, that Hashem* makes a compromise and that He renounces (note 3: To push aside that sin and to condemn it). Teshuvah* remains necessary and it is in this regard that it is said: "He will repent and be healed." From your seventieth birthday, you enter the years of gevurah* (note 4: As it is said: "The years of our life are seventy years, and if gevurah* intervenes, eighty years"). May Hashem* therefore make you a powerful river charged with waging the battle of our Torah*, which instills strength and rigor, without fear. For nothing stands before the will. שלום וברכה! נודעתי מהעתונות כי כב' הגיע ליובל שנות השבעים, והנני שולח לו ברכתי שיאריך השי"ת ימיו ושנותיו בטוב ובנעימים וינצל את כשרונותיו שחונן בהם מההשגחה העליונה וכן ינצל את השפעתו במילואם, מתאים להסיסמה דאורייתא וישראל וקוב"ה כולי חד, ולא רק בדיעות בלבד אלא בהמשכה בחיים היום-יומיים.

וכמו שהכל מודים שהבורא הוא המציאות האמתית והמוחלטה ואין שייך בזה פשרות, שממה נפשך או שמאמינים שהוא ואין עוד מלבדו באמונה שלימה, או שאם האמונה אינה שלימה - אינה מענין זה לגמרי. והוא הדין בהנוגע לתורה שאין שייך בה פשרות. וכן בנוגע לעם ישראל, שאף שידוע מאמר חכמינו ז"ל ישראל אע"פ שחטא ישראל הוא, אבל אין זאת אומרת שאין החטא ולא כלום ושהקב"ה עושה פשרה וותרן הוא, אלא - צריך לעשות תשובה ושב ורפא לו.

וכיון אשר משנות השבעים ואילך נכנס כבודו לשנות הגבורה, יהי רצון שיהי' כמעין המתגבר ללחום מלחמתה של תורתנו הנותנת עוז וגבורה, מבלי חת, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון.
