Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of Rosh Chodesh* Menachem*, in which you tell me that you have been studying, for the second year, at the Yeshivah*, but that you have received little there. Lately, you are no longer learning and you are wasting your time. You therefore wonder how to organize yourself and what to do in the near future. You are considering various possibilities. You are sixteen years old.

According to the teachings of our Torah*, Torah* of life, it is quite evident that you must continue your studies at the Yeshivah*, with ardor and constancy, for all the reasons you invoke are nothing but stratagems of the evil inclination, which incites man in various ways in order to prevent him from having conduct in accordance with the instructions of our Torah*, Torah* of life. You tell me that you are wasting time, but our Sages* teach: "One who tells you he has made efforts without them being crowned with success — do not believe him." If you truly desire it, not only will you not waste your time, but moreover, you will know exceptional success. It is, indeed, at your age that one experiences a period of happiness, which means that if one takes advantage of it in the fitting manner, these days open the path to true happiness, spiritual and material at once. Know therefore clearly that everything depends on you. If you truly make the decision, with the firmness that is fitting, it may, at the beginning, seem to you that it is difficult, but, little by little, you will perceive that a part of these difficulties was imaginary and that one can easily escape those that truly exist. According to the well-known expression, nothing stands before the will.

You surely have knowledge of the fixed studies that pertain to the Chumash*, the Tehilim*, and the Tanya*. At the very least, you will adopt them from now on. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,

שלום וברכה! במענה למכתבו מר"ח מנחם, בו כותב שלומד שנה השני' בישיבה אבל לא קבל הרבה, ובזמן האחרון אינו לומד כי מבטל זמן וכו' ולכן ספק אצלו איך יסתדר ומה יעשה בעתיד הקרוב, וכותב סברות בזה והוא בגיל ט"ז.

והנה מובן וגם פשוט ע"פ הוראת תורתנו תורת חיים שעליו להמשיך בלימוד בישיבה בהתמדה ושקידה, כי כל הטעמים האמורים הן מפיתויי היצר המסית את האדם בכל מיני תחבולות ובלבד למנוע אותו להתנהג מתאים להוראות תורתנו תורת חיים.

ומה שכותב שמבטל זמן וכו' הרי הודיעו חז"ל יגעת ולא מצאת אל תאמין, שלכן אם ירצה באמת לא לבד שלא יבטל זמנו אלא יצליח בלימוד יותר על הרגיל, והרי דוקא ימים שבגילו הם ימי האושר, כוונתי שבאם מנצלים אותם כדבעי הרי הם סוללים הדרך לאשרו האמיתי של האדם, אושר רוחני וגשמי גם יחד, וכאמור ידע ברור שרק בו הדבר תלוי, ובאם יחליט באמת בזה בתוקף במתאים, הנה אף שאפשר שידמה לו שהתחלה באופן זה קשה, הרי מזמן לזמן יווכח שהקישוים בחלקם מדומים הם וגם החלק שישנו, אין קשה כ"כ להתגבר עליו, וכמאמר הידוע אין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון.

בודאי יודע משלשת השיעורים דחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים וישמור עליהם עכ"פ מכאן ולהבא.
